Data modeling should start before you write code.

Not while you're in a SQL editor assuming you already understand the nuances of the business(even though you've never talked to them)

Or while you’re already trying to create objects with an ORM.

Over the last year I have seen a lot of scary data modeling situations.

I am talking about data in 1st normal form level scary.

Honestly, even beyond that, is 0NF a thing?

I know we all want to start writing code and dbt models.

But if your application and data warehouse aren’t modeled well.

It’s only going to get worse, not better.

If you'd like to learn more about data modeling here are a few great places to start.
