I’m Moroccan, and I love Morocco. That’s precisely why I believe we have to tell the truth.
What happened at the Ceuta border was humiliating. It projected an image of a Morocco whose people are so desperate that tens of thousands tried to leave at once, and of a state that appears willing to use migration as leverage against a neighboring country.
Our approach to immigration needs to change. Morocco can negotiate with Spain, but not this way. Moroccans are not bargaining chips, and their lives are not expendable. Those who died died for nothing, and no one has accepted responsibility.
Blaming Spain does not absolve Morocco of its own responsibilities toward its own people. Period.
Ceuta, Melilla, and the Canary Islands have been Spanish for more than two centuries before the United States even came into existence; more than three centuries before the United States occupied over 55% of Mexico’s territory; more than three centuries before the unification of Germany and Italy; more than four centuries before the establishment of the State of Israel; and more than four centuries before Finland became an independent state. Yet for several days now, a number of self-styled “experts” and policy commentators (many affiliated with American think tanks) have been trying to deny that historical reality across social media. History, however, does not change to accommodate political narratives. Repeat a lie often enough, amplify it through social media, and before long many people will mistake it for the truth.
I am from Ceuta, and Spain has never oppressed us. You genocidal maniacs do not get to weaponise our identity or speak on our fucking behalf. Shut the fuck up.

Me encanta.
