The White House and immigration judges claim it's safe to go back to Venezuela. Yet this is what just happened to a former mayor just 48 hours after returning to Venezuela from a years-long exile. He was kidnapped by Delcy Rodriguez' forces and he's been missing since. This is where Trump wants US companies to do business.
The 'alcabalas' - police checkpoints - in Venezuela are horrendous. But now it seems they are being removed. But from what I can see Delcy says 'in the cities.' So will this also apply to the awful ones across the country at random points, and ones like Perecal near the Colombia border, or literally just cities?
Had my bags checked, telephone checked and generally just been interrogated at certains ones ever since I first started coming to Venezuela in 2023. (Although never had an issue INSIDE a city, only outside.) One guy said this year when I came in Feb that they're for my 'safety,' which confused me greatly as he was treating me like a criminal and I was the only one he ordered down from the bus, asked me many questions and checked my bags. (Just to say, some police have been really nice, others average, others on a power trip and some downright abusive.) But seriously, I know so many people - Venezuelans and foreigners - who have been seriously mistreated at these checkpoints, or bribed. They're one reason I avoid travelling to more places across the country, and why I warn anyone wanting to visit. Eliminating them can surely only be a positive thing. Thoughts?
