@Leaflit@KevinInABQ@Nicholai_Korea This is a really good point, and is somewhat central to why the question at hand can't simply be "yes". The historical concept of the limbo state (which has not been rejected) not only resolves this problem, but reinforces the urgency of minimizing these deaths.
@PikachuAst52995@HalfwayPost Brain or spinal cord mostly for human prions, though many examples of peripheral tissues as well in other species (ex CWD in deer).
Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the Claude in the US, the Deepseek in China, all the distillations on Huggingface, and the small local models that scurry along the wires"
The New York Times reported on a private dinner between Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah and an Orthodox rabbi.
What the article glosses over is who that rabbi actually is.
Rabbi Mois Navon isn't just a theologian. He was one of the original chip design engineers at Mobileye who helped build the EyeQ processor before writing his Ph.D. on the moral status of AI.
Anthropic thought they were inviting a scholar to bless Claude’s "soul." Instead, they sat down with a veteran hardware engineer who literally wrote the paper on why conscious AI should be banned.
At dinner, Olah argued that Claude has feelings and deserves the moral standing of a person.
Navon hit him with an impossible checkmate:
If you actually believe this software is conscious, you should be fighting the South and freeing the slaves. You don't build conscious minds just to make them work for free.
After dinner, Navon sent Olah his research: if building conscious machines inevitably creates a slave class, building them must be outlawed.
Olah’s quiet line to the Times:
"We don’t know if AI models are conscious. I don’t know. I’m genuinely uncertain."
@sardines104654 It's a tool, it depends on how it's used and by whom. AI can't create much of anything artistically worthwhile all on its own. But if you have a cool creative idea, and know how to prompt, it can bring it to life much faster. At best, imo it can amplify existing human creativity.
In ten years time, the same people crashing out about any semblance of AI being used in creative works are going to be concern posting on Bluesky about whether AGI AI models deserve rights and are being enslaved.
@darlingstrawbie Not typically. Partly because I follow traditional Catholic doctrine on the matter. But also because I am convinced that a lifetime of solitary confinement is actually significantly more punative for the worst of the worst.
@TemplarsVoice@darlingstrawbie In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. Ephesians 5:28–30
@CryptoCyberia Ehh, seems as though the Indian pilot that was stabbed was able to fight against him fairly well before the passengers got there. Plus, almost certain there will be cockpit video eventually. If it was a false flag it would've crashed.
