Blisko 40 lat temu w Łodzi zaczął się proceder mordowania pacjentów SOR-òw dla kasy. Poleciały nic nie znaczące postacie tej sytuacji.

The devotees of the OUN\UPA cult in Ukraine should remember one inconvenient fact: in the spring of 1943, at least 5,000 members of the auxiliary police (Schutzmannschaft) joined the ranks of the UPA.

Among them were former police commanders in Nazi-occupied Ukraine who later became UPA commanders, including Omelian Hrabets, Martyn Mizerny, and Volodymyr Shchyhelskyi.

These were not simply "patriots" fighting for independence. These were men complicit in Nazi Holocaust and had been socialized in anti-Jewish violence.
They hunted down Jews trying to escape Nazi persecution.
They guarded ghettos and forced-labor camps, preventing Jews from fleeing.
They escorted Jews to sites of mass murder and, alongside the Germans, took part in the shootings.

The skills, experience, and methods acquired in the machinery of the Holocaust did not disappear when these men changed uniforms.

They were later deployed against their Polish neighbors in the campaign to create an ethnically homogeneous Ukrainian state.

The road from participation in anti-Jewish violence to anti-Polish violence was, for many of them, alarmingly short.

This is why many of the celebrated "heroes of the UPA" were not only perpetrators of anti-Polish violence but also participants in the Holocaust.

They were implicated in two genocidal projects.

These are the figures whom contemporary Ukraine has chosen to elevate as national heroes.

And yet, when others express discomfort, criticism, or outright rejection of this choice, Ukrainians are often surprised by the reaction. They should not be. Historical memory cannot be selective forever, and hero worship does not erase historical responsibility.

Defenders of the UPA insist that its myth is indispensable to Ukraine during an 'existential war' with Russia because it offers a story of successful anti-Soviet resistance.

Yet the historical record tells a different story.

🔴Between 1944 and 1953, the OUN and UPA killed roughly 8,000 Soviet security and military personnel (NKVD/MVD, NKGB/MGB officers, Internal Troops, border guards, regular servicemen, and members of extermination battalions).

🔴But around 22,000 of their victims were civilians: teachers, local officials, collective farm members, Komsomol activists, election workers, suspected Soviet sympathizers, and often their families, including small children.

🔴Their largest victim group, however, were the approximately 100,000 Polish civilians murdered in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia.

🔴Nor should we forget that OUN members serving in auxiliary police units facilitated the Holocaust, while others participated in anti-Jewish pogroms and hunted down Jews in hiding.

The numbers alone suggest that the UPA and OUN spent far more energy killing unarmed civilians than fighting armed opponents due to its fascist ideology and fanaticism of its leaders.

Does a democratic Ukraine truly need such figures as national heroes?

In a media interview, Zelensky admitted that he was annoyed when, during his first official meeting with President Nawrocki, he was presented with books about the Volhynia massacres.

But then again, somebody has to teach the guy some history. So far, his tutors seem to be neo-Nazis and Azov enthusiasts.

That might explain why, in the army where he serves as Supreme Commander-in-Chief, some units have used symbols such as the Wolfsangel, the Black Sun, SS insignia, the Nazi eagle, and even references to Dirlewanger as official emblems.

Apparently, when history lessons are skipped, the visual aids start teaching the course instead.

I was nearly fired from the Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine for challenging the cult of the OUN and UPA.
The director of my institute reported me to the Security Service of Ukraine.
My colleagues bullied me.
They 'joked' about my father's cancer.
Antisemites targeted me as well.
They wish me death by OUN methods.
They slashed my salary to the level of a cleaning lady's wage.

Today, the world is finally seeing what it means to challenge the OUN\UPA cult in Ukraine.

Welcome to reality:
a country where the glorification of war criminals from OUN and UPA has been elevated to a national creed, and where dissent is punished, ostracized, and
smeared as "work for the Kremlin".
