Two things can be true at once.
The Mexica/Aztec world absolutely practiced ritual human sacrifice on a scale that shocked even hardened contemporaries. Cortés, Bernal Díaz, Sahagún, Durán, and Indigenous post-conquest codices all describe it in disturbing detail. Archaeology backs parts of it too. The skull racks at Tenochtitlan were real. Excavations of the Huey Tzompantli uncovered hundreds of skulls, including women and children.
But people flatten this topic into “therefore conquest was justified.”
The same Spanish record people quote also documents massacres, enslavement, forced conversion, destruction of books, execution of nobles, famine, epidemics, and systems like encomienda that devastated entire populations.
Bernal Díaz himself… the same source quoted above also wrote in awe about Tenochtitlan:
“When we saw so many cities and villages built in the water… we were amazed… indeed some of our soldiers asked whether the things that we saw were not a dream.”
That matters too and so does this from Cortés:
“There are in this great city many temples… and among them excellent buildings.”
And Bernardino de Sahagún, after documenting sacrifice, still described Nahua society as deeply organized, educated, disciplined, artistic, and sophisticated.
The problem is modern people want clean moral binaries. The Mexica Empire was not a utopia. It was an expansionist state that used warfare, tribute, intimidation, slavery, and ritual killing. Many Indigenous groups allied with the Spanish against them for a reason. Tlaxcalans did not join Cortés because they were tricked by Europeans with magic. They had political reasons and longstanding conflicts with Mexica power.
But calling the civilization “Stone Age savages” while ignoring what Spain was doing globally in the same century is just selective morality dressed up as historical clarity.
Spain had the Inquisition.
Europe had public torture and execution.
Colonial powers enslaved millions.
Religious violence consumed entire populations across continents.
The list could go on.
History gets dangerous when people start using atrocity as retroactive permission for conquest. Especially because most of the people who died after contact did not die on sacrificial stones. They died from smallpox, collapse, starvation, forced labor, displacement, and colonial restructuring.
A civilization is bigger than its worst ritual. Tenochtitlan had aqueducts, causeways, massive market systems, botanical knowledge, sanitation systems, poetry, philosophy, astronomy, diplomacy, engineering, and one of the largest urban populations on Earth at the time. Even Spanish witnesses repeatedly admitted this.
That complexity is the real historical record. You know just a collision between two imperial systems, both capable of brutality, entering one of the most consequential encounters in human history.
I hate when people at work ask you what books you are reading for professional development. I am reading books to counteract the effects of being professionally developed. I am reading books that bring me back to being human.

I've tasted being a great employee, and I've also tasted being the hero at work. I highly recommend doing the bare minimum at work, getting paid, and going home.
