Miyamoto explained how the relative failure of the GameCube vs. the PS2 led to the creation of Wii & DS:

"Before creating the DS, we made the Nintendo GameCube as something that was highly versatile, something anyone could use, something that any software maker could easily develop for, and something that was affordable. But it didn’t get the response we had hoped for. There were game consoles that sold well, but a lot of people bought them mainly to watch DVDs. The GameCube, on the other hand, was only bought by people who played games. One analysis of why the sales figures fell behind those of another game console at the time was that. I remember talking with Mr. Iwata and saying, “The world still hasn’t reached the point where ‘playing games is just a normal part of everyday life,’ has it?”

After all, we never used to divide people into “those who read books and those who don’t.” (Though perhaps people do make that distinction more nowadays.) Looking back, at the time we were making products for a segment of customers, and there was a period when we debated, “But isn’t Nintendo supposed to be a company that creates entertainment for a much broader range of people?”

The conclusion we reached through those discussions was that if we kept making controllers more and more complicated in the traditional way of game machines, people who had never played games would become even less likely to approach them....

With the DS and Wii, we were trying to rapidly spread a new kind of play using game systems throughout society, and because that worked to a certain extent, the idea spread that creating the interface itself could also be part of the fun. I think that was a very significant thing."

The kind of leader he was, what he believed in, how he treated everyone at Nintendo feels especially important this year.

I’m so sorry for everyone at id Software affected by these layoffs.

I know what it feels like to leave id while id goes on. It’s a strange and painful thing to step away from a place that holds so much of your work, friendships and history.

The people at id have done a great job moving that legacy forward. DOOM, Quake, and Wolfenstein are not easy names to carry on, especially in today’s industry. The last few games showed real care, skill and respect for what those worlds mean to people.

A note on digital preservation: id's history is critically important to the history of games. I’ve preserved id’s complete early history from our start at Softdisk through to August 6, 1996, including materials and assets that, as far as I know, id itself no longer has. I hope someone is doing the same for the company’s ongoing legacy (the work, code, assets, stories and the people behind them).

I’m thinking of everyone at id today, and everyone else affected by yesterday’s layoffs. Romero Games was there a year ago. I know how devastating it is, and my heart's with all of you.
