Researchers in Texas and Portugal have created a cancer-killing therapy that pairs cheap LED lights with atom-thin tin oxide nanoflakes to wipe out tumors while sparing healthy tissue.

The process is photothermal: near-infrared LEDs shine on the tin flakes (SnOx), which absorb the light and warm up precisely enough to cook nearby cancer cells. In lab tests, a 30-minute session destroyed 92% of skin-cancer cells and 50% of colorectal-cancer cells, yet left normal human skin cells untouched—precision that chemo and radiation rarely match.

The team envisions wearable patches for post-surgical cleanup to stop recurrence, plus implantable versions for deeper tumors like breast cancer.

The bigger aim: deliver hospital-grade treatment to clinics, homes, and underserved regions worldwide.
