I want to be direct about this one, because defusion is sometimes mistaken for a kind of mental cheerleading, and that misunderstanding defeats the purpose entirely.
Defusion is not about replacing negative thoughts with positive ones. It is not about convincing yourself that things will be fine, or that you're capable, or that the fear isn't valid. It is about changing your relationship with your thoughts, not their content. The goal is to see a thought as a mental event rather than a fact, regardless of whether the thought is negative or positive.
Here's the practical difference: positive thinking asks you to believe "I am confident and capable" instead of "I am going to fail." Defusion says: notice both of those as thoughts. Notice the one your mind is producing right now, hold it a little more lightly, and then decide what you're going to do, not based on which thought wins, but based on what you actually value.
