Trump:
We have the President of Kenya, we have the Olympics here.
They do very well in the Olympics those runners, I don't know what the heck you do with those runners, they are very good.
It’s happening
On November 23, 2025, Ethiopia's Hayli Gubbi volcano erupted for the first time in over 12,000 years, sending towering ash plumes into the sky and startling communities in the Afar region. This ancient volcano, long considered dormant, had no recorded eruption in the Holocene epoch, making this event one of the most significant geological phenomena in East Africa in recent history. Ash reached heights of 14 kilometers, drifting across the Red Sea and affecting neighboring countries like Yemen and Oman.
Locals in nearby Afdera described the eruption as sounding like "a sudden bomb," while satellite imagery confirmed the massive spread of volcanic ash and sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere.
Scientists are closely monitoring Hayli Gubbi, as it is a rare window into the tectonic and volcanic activity that has been quietly shaping the Afar Triple Junction, one of the most geologically active regions on Earth.
This eruption is not an isolated event. It is part of a much larger story unfolding across East Africa a story that stretches far beyond a single volcano. The Great Rift Valley, which runs from Ethiopia down through Kenya and Tanzania, is a massive tectonic scar, where the African continent is slowly pulling apart. The very forces that awakened Hayli Gubbi are the same forces that are reshaping the landscape of the Rift Valley, tilting lake floors, creating land cracks and triggering landslides across the region.
In Kenya, lakes such as Naivasha, Baringo, Bogoria and Nakuru have been rising faster than usual. While rainfall and climate factors play a role, tectonic movement under the Rift Valley is causing underground water channels to shift and valley floors to tilt. These subtle shifts can redirect water flow, expanding lakes and sometimes destabilizing slopes which explains the increasing landslides and sinkholes observed across the Rift.
All these changes, the volcanic eruption, the rising lakes, the land cracks and landslides are connected by one profound geological truth, East Africa is slowly splitting apart. Over millions of years, this tectonic activity will eventually form a new ocean, separating the Horn of Africa from the rest of the continent. Today's eruptions and shifting landscapes are the first signs of this monumental transformation.

#HackAGreenFuture hackathon: The Kajiado County team is presenting bold, tech-enabled solutions to tackle the invasive ipomoea weed.
Their challenge: How might we design innovative technologies to control and eventually eradicate ipomoea, protect pasturelands, improve livestock feed availability, and strengthen community resilience to climate shocks? #SiliconSavannah
As we give Baba @RailaOdinga a final bid, I'd like to handle stress as easily as he did. He possessed an amazing ability to put things into perspective. Buried is a man whose spirit will never fade.
