Joint Media Release: Pacific Hosts Global Climate Body in Historic First for the Region

Majuro, Republic of the Marshall Islands: The Executive Committee of the Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage associated with Climate Change Impacts (WIM ExCom) is meeting in the Pacific for the first time, convening in Majuro, Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) from 14 to 18 September 2026.

The meeting in Majuro comes at a particularly important time for international climate diplomacy. Held in advance of the Pre-COP31 meetings and COP31, it provides an opportunity to build greater visibility and momentum around the Pacific’s priorities on loss and damage, and reinforces the region’s call for climate action that is equitable, responsive, and grounded in lived experience.

Karlos Lee Moresi, Programme Adviser and Team Leader – Climate Finance & Resilience at the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS), was today invited by the Fijian Media Association to brief journalists on regional priorities ahead of COP31, which will be held in Antalya, Türkiye. The briefing was part of a one-day media masterclass organised by the Association.

COP31 represents a landmark arrangement under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), bringing together a unique Türkiye–Australia partnership that places the Pacific at the centre of global climate engagement. Under this framework, Türkiye will hold the COP31 Presidency, Australia will serve as President of Negotiations, and the Pacific will host the pre-COP31 meetings.

In preparation for next weeks 55th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting, police officers from across our Blue Pacific are in Palau to support Palau's Bureau of Public Safety with security operations.

The Pacific Officers will support a safe and secure Leaders Meeting, demonstrating the strength of regional cooperation and our shared commitment to working together.

The Pacific Police Support Group is a multinational police response capability trained to rapidly deploy and assist Pacific island countries during planned major events or unplanned crises like natural disasters.

Our Forum Troika Leaders previously toured the Pinkenba Hub in Brisbane, Australia, in January and met with members of the Pacific Police Support Group.

CROP Heads and CROP Governing Council Chairs have met over the past two days with the Forum Troika Review Committee to discuss their findings on the issues delegated for further consideration by Forum Leaders in 2025.

This work represents the final element in the review phase of RRA before the focus shifts to implementing the emerging regional reform agenda from the RRA process to date.

At the 67th CROP Heads Meeting, CROP Heads also advanced preparations for the Leaders-CROP Dialogue at the 55th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Palau, supporting a coordinated CROP contribution to Leaders and Members.

The second meeting of the Public Finance Management (PFM) Regional Coordination Mechanism was held virtually on 24 July 2026 and hosted by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS).

The meeting was chaired by Ayako Yamaguchi-Eliou, Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Banking and Postal Services of the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

Key discussion areas included updates from the 2026 Forum Economic Ministers Meeting, held in the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Public Finance Management Regional Coordination Mechanism work programme for 2026–2027.

The Forum Economic Ministers Meeting in 2024 endorsed the establishment of the Public Financial Management Regional (PFM).

It is a coordination mechanism to address challenges in PFM technical assistance and capacity building across Pacific Island Countries.
