Gene Wilder’s performance as Willy Wonka should be ranked among the greatest performances in film history.

Almost everyone knows how great he is in WILLY WONKA & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY (1971), but whenever people make lists of the greatest acting performances ever, I almost never see Wilder mentioned. I honestly think he deserves to be much higher.

I wouldn’t call it underrated. Everyone knows it’s one of his defining roles. But I think people sometimes overlook just how much Wilder is actually doing here.

There’s this strange balance to Wonka that he gets perfectly. He’s funny, charming, mysterious and then suddenly a little unsettling. You never completely know what he’s thinking. Even his pauses and little looks feel deliberate.

The famous entrance says everything. Wilder insisted that Wonka enter with a cane and a limp, making the audience think something was wrong with him before suddenly doing a somersault. Wilder wanted that moment to establish that nobody would know whether Wonka was telling the truth or lying.

And there’s so much Charlie Chaplin and silent film comedy in the performance too. Wilder is constantly acting with his body. The expressions, the timing, the little movements. He can make Wonka hilarious without even saying anything.

I probably wouldn’t put it next to Meryl Streep in SOPHIE’S CHOICE or Daniel Day-Lewis in THERE WILL BE BLOOD.

But as a comedic performance?

I genuinely think Gene Wilder belongs in that conversation with Peter O’Toole in LAWRENCE OF ARABIA and Jack Nicholson in ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST.

Different kinds of performances, obviously, but all three completely own their movies.

And I honestly can’t imagine anyone else playing Willy Wonka the way Gene Wilder did.
