Just saw the new Masters of the Universe last night. It was crazy, fun, and action packed. It looked awesome. They embraced the wild playfulness of the original cartoon, mocked woke nonsense, and mostly stayed away from any real leftist agenda.
@RealPostFolder I ain’t ever raising anyone else’s kids. Unless the man is literally dead and unless the kid is an infant/toddler that will never remember the bio dad then I would NEVER consider being a step dad. I’m also not interested in being the back up guy AFTER you chose someone over me.
Sounds like you didn’t watch it or didn’t pay attention. You went in with your mind made up before starting the movie.
Adam has a great character arc about becoming the MAN he needs to be through fighting, action and leading through fear instead of trying to talk things through. Stop being a Karen and complaining about everything.
I did not consider it a woke film. It subtly pokes fun at Wokeness and the pronouns. It’s pro masculinity as the core message is that there’s a time for talking and a time for fighting and there’s nothing wrong with fighting for the people you love and care about because that’s what makes you a man regardless of fear and doubt. It also made it clear that someone’s bad guys are just villains and don’t need to be justified and that was refreshing.
@BeAfraid_Horror@SamuEl_KentMan I’ve never seen the cartoon and I don’t know the lore and I really enjoyed the movie. It’s partly an origin story and the movie does a great job at giving you the lore early on so you don’t feel lost.
@stranwberryes I watched it yesterday in the U.S. and the theater was decently full and everyone in there was enjoying it and laughing with the jokes. It really is a fun summer movie. It feels like the perfect movie to get the summer started.
@arielhelwani I use to be a diehard UFC fan but ever since they sold to TKO and brought Hunter Campbell in the UFC drastically went downhill fast. At this point I’m only interested in UFC numbered events and even then I’m not excited for half of them anymore.
Some people just can’t have fun at the movies.
It’s fun. Remember fun ya cynical fucks?
Sure it’s stupid, silly, a little bloated… but it’s also funny, cool, fun, nostalgic and cartoony.
Just like the cartoon is.
MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE underperformed.
But the franchise may not be dead.
The movie opened around $29M domestic, came in #2 for the weekend, and held its ground against BACKROOMS and OBSESSION, two movies clearly built for younger audiences that actually show up right now.
For a reported $170M tentpole, that is not a win.
But it is also not nothing.
The demographic breakdown tells the real story.
The audience was reportedly 68% male, 57% over 35, and heavily driven by the 45-54 crowd. Basically, dads and the kids who grew up with HE-MAN in the 80s.
Kids under 12 were only around 4-5% of the audience.
That is the problem.
But the kids who did show up reportedly loved it, with very strong PostTrak scores among that group. Dads also showed up harder than moms.
That is the opportunity.
MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE did not fail because nobody cares.
It struggled because Amazon MGM did not get enough of the right people in the room opening weekend.
But now they know who actually came.
Dads. Boys. Nostalgia fans. Families willing to take the shot.
That is not a dead franchise. Not by a freaking long shot.
The theatrical run may not save the budget, but Prime Video absolutely could build the audience this movie needed from the start.
If Amazon looks at the data instead of the dunking, MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE still has a future.
Let the dads cook.
@Syke_13@PeteS316@BigThingShow@gregsilverman I was just going to say this. It was cartoony because that’s the source material. The movie did a phenomenal job at bringing that vibe and feel to the big screen.
I have no knowledge of the source material but after great marketing and good word of mouth I went to go watch it today and was pleasantly surprised at how good it really was.
Unfortunately it’s an IP that just isn’t popular in this day and age, and I have never met anyone that’s ever watched the original stuff. I really think that this movie should have released at the beginning of spring or end of summer because it’s really fighting an uphill battle with all the competition during summer showings.
@robertliefeld It is a GREAT movie and I say this as someone that knows nothing about masters of the universe. I really hope people go out and watch this movie because it is worth it.
