The Welland Canal is one of the most important pieces of infrastructure in the Great Lakes.
Built to bypass Niagara Falls, it connects Lake Erie with Lake Ontario, allowing ships from the upper Great Lakes to continue toward the St. Lawrence River and Atlantic Ocean. The first canal opened in 1829, while today's much larger fourth canal opened in 1932. Its eight locks raise or lower ships about 99 metres (326 feet) over its roughly 43-km (27-mile) route.
Its economic importance is enormous. In 2017, Niagara Economic Development reported that 78% of the St. Lawrence Seaway's C$10 billion in economic activity passed through Niagara via the Welland Canal—roughly C$7.8 billion.
