Note: this is mostly in response to the obnoxious academics and universities, not the regular every day people.
You know what?
Since some people are offended by BC/AD because of the Christian reference and choose to stir away from it and use BCE/CE (cool freedom of speech), then while respecting their freedom, I'm gonna use my own freedom and make it blatantly obvious that I am Christian and I'm gonna go full Medieval on this. From now on I'll say "year of our Lord".
Guy: Hey Metatron, when did you buy this Xbox series X?
Metatron: I bought my Xbox series X in the year of our Lord 2020.
Watch me.
Germany has managed to build a €650 mil, 10.000t frigate that is essentially useless for any but the most benign of operational environments. Anything above a Somali pirate skiff and the F-125 is in trouble.
BREAKING
Former Republican California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger endorsed Vice President Harris:
“A candidate who won’t respect your vote unless it is for him, a candidate who will send his followers to storm the Capitol while he watches with a Diet Coke, a candidate who has shown no ability to work to pass any policy besides a tax cut that helped his donors…
We need to close the door on this chapter of American history, and I know that former President Trump won’t do that.He will divide, he will insult, he will find new ways to be more un-American than he already has been, and we, the people, will get nothing but more anger…
I want to move forward as a country, and even though I have plenty of disagreements with their platform, I think the only way to do that is with Harris and Walz. Vote this week. Turn the page and put this junk behind us."
BCE/CE is nonsense. They changed BC/AD because of its ties to religion, specifically Christianity yet all days of the week are tied to the ancient gods and they didn't change those. Wednesday is the day of Wōden so Odin, Thursday is the day of Thor, Saturday is the day of Saturn etc.
If you want BCE/CE to even make sense logically then you would have to alter two fundamental factors.
1 - Be fair and change all the names of the days of the week. (I hope not they sound great)
2 - Pick another date of reference because calling it "common era" and then still using the birth of Jesus as a point of reference makes the whole exercise ridiculous and futile, as all these alterations for the sensibilities of modern audiences and corrupt academics are.
If YOU as a single individual want to use it of course you can use it and I would never try to force you to use BC/AD because freedom of speech, but it still remains nonsense in my opinion and I won't comply. BC/AD until the day I die.
PS: Also Anno Domini. Latin is epic sounding, so good luck beating that.
Last year in particular, there were repeated discussions about how useful the Leopard 1A5 MBTs supplied by Germany, the Netherlands, and Denmark actually are to the AFU. The relatively thin armour in particular was repeatedly highlighted.
Firstly, yes, there are plenty of reports that (during the day) certain units use the Leopard 1A5 MBTs almost exclusively practically as artillery pieces and tend to use Soviet tanks whose armour is thicker for direct attacks on Russian positions since the threat from loitering munitions is too high during the day.
However, there are also upsides which needs to be highlighted. Compared to many Soviet tanks, the Leopard 1A5 MBTs are fast, manoeuvrable, have modern optics, received upgrades like more modern sensors and have a much longer range.
Ukrainian soldiers have repeatedly reported that they can engage Russian tanks far beyond the enemies range. This is achieved through, for example, superior optics and fire control systems.
But the reason for my tweet is to talk about the relatively thin armour once again. To counter the thin armour and better protect the crews against all kinds of threats, the AFU is working hard with the Ukrainian industry to equip the Leopard 1A5s with additional reactive armour and anti-drone nets.
In late November 2023, Ukraine suffered the first confirmed loss of a Leopard 1A5 MBT on a field south of Andriivka (Luhansk oblast) after the crew drove into an open field. Since then, Ukraine lost at least four additional Leopard 1A5s.
Three of the losses had none of the upgrades mentioned above installed, the last loss had all of these upgrades and was made public on Monday through a small Russian Telegram channel (see video).
Let's focus on the tweet in German I quoted here. @ArturWeigandt, who published this tweet, is a German journalist who was, for example, also involved as a translator/interpreter in the Leopard 1 training of Ukrainian soldiers in 2023.
Since then, he has stayed in contact with various crews and is raising funds again and again to buy equipment like personal equipment, star links, drones, cars and more for the Leopard 1A5 crews. I emphasise this to underline that he is a very reliable source in my eyes.
Back to the armour of the Leopard 1A5s. The question many people still have is how safe is the crew in the event of a direct hit?
On Sunday, he published a tweet announcing that he had received a video message from a soldier friend of his. His Leopard 1A5 had been completely destroyed, but the crew had actually survived and managed to escape to safety. There is currently no video of that event published.
I had a little chat with him about it, and he said that the tank took a direct hit from cumulative ammunition and the crew still survived. And we're talking about a Leopard 1A5 without additional reactive armour (unlike in the video shown)!
In the other cases documented so far, the hatches were also open, which indicates that the crews there were also able to get to safety after being hit.
That's five documented losses, five instances where hatches were open, which indicates the crews escaped to safety (in some videos you even see soldiers running). In how many cases can we say that about crews operating Soviet tanks?
So I would say that it is certainly true that Soviet tanks in many cases have thicker armour and at first glance offer better protection against hits, but the Leopard 1A5 should not be underestimated and are still a good deal for the AFU.
And after seeing his tweet, I wanted to highlight that once and for all.
There are said to be less than a dozen of Heckler & Koch's newest rifle, the HK433, currently in #Ukraine.
I spoke to some of the Ukrainian operators who have been issued them.
