I talk about a variety of things. Not always in nice language. I follow b/c I enjoy your tweets, not for followbacks. And I'm offended that you're offended.
@JimKidd9@PolymarketSport Whoops, I meant her mother's husband. Remarried long after my wife was an adult, so stepfather didn't seem right. You're correct, her father-in-law was my late Dad.
@BRFCJohn Excellent. You gotta hit up Acme Oyster House on Iberville, or Felix's across the street. Get a muffuletta sandwich from Central Grocery for lunch, and stop at Verti Marte on Royal for a sandwich at 3AM (suggested: Power House or Royal Feast, but can't go wrong with anything).
@_Useless_Tree_@johnkonrad In my mostly liberal affluent East Bay suburb, the residents rage about leaf blowers running at any time of the day. There was even a New Yorker article about the [city] leaf blower wars in 2010.
@alexthechick "If there was ever a problem that violence failed to solve, it's only because insufficient violence was brought to bear on the situation."
- Geoff Miller, on Usenet, 19-ninety-something.
@jrerving@elsathora First time I ate at the Tadich Grill was about 30 years ago. They still had pay phones by the bathrooms, and as I was going to wash up I overheard someone on a call saying "I just ate at the Tadich Grill; I've got so much fish in me I feel like the Steinhart Aquarium."
@elijah2314@elsathora@TheRealJeffMac5@NoKreisFC Birria tacos are great. Quesabirria tacos are even greater.
Best ones are at taquerias in Mexican neighborhoods that also offer meat options like lengua (tongue), tripas (intestine), cabeza (braised head meat), sesos (brains), etc.
@iowahawkblog Back in the Usenet days, some academic wrote a series of screeds about working at what they pseudonymously called "Terrible Texas University." Made the place sound like an amateur-hour mess that was more about football than academics.
@SleestakMack@elsathora@Twolly_Th She moved up from Pacific Palisades in the 90s. Probably to be closer to her daughter and her soon-to-be grandchildren.
@SleestakMack@elsathora@Twolly_Th She is now. Her daughter and son-in-law are there too. I worked with her son-in-law 30 years ago, met her a couple times. They were all in the Oakland hills near the tunnel at the time; we once went up to her house on 4th of July and could see fireworks all over the bay.
@SleestakMack@elsathora@Twolly_Th When the hostess seated us, she said "That's where Rita Moreno sits when she comes here." (She lives in the next town over.)
@elsathora I see recommendations for Ghirardelli chocolate. It's better than Hershey (which is a very low bar to clear), but I think Europeans who are used to Swiss and Belgian chocolate would not be impressed.
@Zvezda73@elsathora Dungeness crab is a must-try. Large enough to get big chunks of meat, which justifies the work involved in eating it, and the flavor is very sweet. It's kept live in tanks until cooking, so should be fresh as can be.
@elsathora If you're in the Embarcadero area, Tadich Grill on California Street. Oldest continuously run restaurant in California, specializing in seafood. The cioppino (fish stew invented in SF by Italian & Portuguese fishermen) is divine.
