#OTD Typhoon Tip peaked with winds of 200mph 868mb based on my analysis, using recon extrapolation of the 700mb height levels and reverse CKZ. Tip is the largest Tropical Cyclone ever with a wind diameter of 1,380 miles beating the previous record of Marge in 1951
#OTD Today Viola 1961 peaked with winds of 185mph along with a pressure of 894mb. The analysis is from recon data of Violet, there was a 882mb fix but extrapolation of the 700mb height levels showed 894mb. With reverse CKZ it returned 185mph.
#OTD A year ago, Hurricane Ian reached its peak intensity of 160mph as a Category 5. Ian is the costliest in Florida history and ranked as the third-costliest tropical cyclone. (I don't have an estimate for Ian but I'll probably say it's a borderlines Cat 5)
Today on August 16, 1969. Camille would peak in the gulf of mexico today in terms of winds. The second most intense hurricane to landfall on the US behind the Labor Day hurricane
72 years ago today, Typhoon Marge formed, on August 10, 2023. Officially the JTWC went with no more than 100kts and 886mb. By using surface analysis 190mph is what I have for Marge (1951)
Hurricane Allen was active on August 9, 2023. It peaked 2 days ago on August 7, 1980. Officially Allen peaked with 190mph. But this storm was a bit overestimated. Recon data suggests Allen topped off at 185mph. Either way, this storm was very destructive.
Typhoon #Doksuri / #EgayPH continues getting closer to the Philippines while also becoming stronger. Deteriorated condisions are currently prevailing over most of Luzon and some parts of Visayas.
And yes Ida is actually
865mb, a direct measurement from a brand new US military hospital ship. 865mb in the eye, 880mb in the eyewall, recorded winds of 150knots
