@amazon, you want to hear #alexastories? Here is mine: I used to love my name. It is a huge part of my identity. You turned my name into a command & a synonym for "servant". It changed how people talk to me and causes troubles wherever @alexa99 is around. #RebrandAlexa
Announcing Season II of Wake Up: The Truth About Alexa. Thrilled to have these three incredible women as expert guests on episode I. Alexa Ard, Editor at The Washington Post, Dr. Alexa Hagerty, University of Cambridge, and Alexa Koenig, JD, PhD, UCLA Berkeley School of Law
Imagine giving an AI assistant a women’s name, further enforcing the patriarchal values of women as servants, and then making this post asking women to once again do all the work for you. Phew.
“While Alexa was once simply a woman's name, it has become widely associated with Amazon, since the tech giant launched a smart assistant with the same name back in 2014.”
@AlexaAlliance
I wrote a bit about Alexa and digital assistants. I want the ability to name my own digital assistant, but with cutbacks coming in digital assistant departments I doubt we will be getting that any time soon. It's very unfortunate for people named Alexa. https://t.co/XxHNpF5UTo
Thanks to @Independent for putting a spotlight on @amazon supporting bullying by giving its voice assistant a human name. #rebrandAlexa

This headline says “Court allows little Alexa to change her name”.
Why is it not “Amazon forces little Alexa to change her name”?

Read the headline and think about #Alexa as a woman or girl.
✔️ misogynistic
✔️ derogatory
✔️ destructive
Amazon is supporting bullying towards girls and women and is killing the female name Alexa. #RebrandAlexa

The headline says “Nobody has to be called Alexa or Siri”: Judges in Germany have allowed a young Alexa to take a different first name. But honestly: shouldn’t it rather be “Nobody should have to change their name”? 😒 @derspiegel@ethikrat#RebrandAlexa

@AfterAlexa @CelineAubert4 @AlexaJulianaArd This has me all fired up now. @amazon could so easily change this and spare thousands of women the grief of being dehumanized. I've definitely been teased, as a Mary, but I never had to face the humiliation of being asked to change my name for the sake of a machine! Ridiculous!
@patrickhwillems It is actually a human name and there are plenty of “real” Alexas on TV, wouldn’t be nice to kick them out of their job bc of their name. But maybe you start a petition to prohibit human names as wake word for digital devices. I would appreciate it. 💪
1 year ago I thought there must be more people than just me feeling the injustice of the commercial misuse of a human name as command word for a digital servant. I registered on Twitter & found incredibly smart & dedicated people from around the 🌎 fighting for the same goal.❤️
