While most people know they rely on their phone's GPS to get around, I feel as though enough people do not realize how extensively we depend on apps. The comfort being on your phone brings you, can become very dangerous and enable you to continue becoming more dependent.
"But what if you want to be app-enabled rather than app-dependent because you want to remain the agent of your own life? If so, it is important to... #eme4390m2022
Since a real world example is provided, this makes the issue seem much more serious and real. I personally hate being dependent on things, and this article really helped open my eyes to see things I am dependent on and don't even realize that I am.
I will definitely be using this article for the next project in this class, since I find data mining and the ethics of it very interesting. It is insane to hear how casually these companies will sell your location data, just for profit, so ads can be tailored for your area.
"Apps form the backbone of this new location data economy.
...Targeted advertising is by far the most common use of the information." Your Apps Know Where You Were Last Night, and They’re Not Keeping It Secret by By Jennifer Valentino-DeVries, Natasha Singer, et al. #eme4390m2022
This excerpt, and the term that was mentioned before it really stood out to me because I see this happen all the time in my generation. "App-enabling" is a real thing that happens to a lot of people, especially where if their phone died; they would be lost or not know what to do.
"But there is a dark side to life when we come to rely on an app, or apps in general, doing only what the programs recommend. We call this “app-dependence.”" Guest: Are apps becoming a human crutch? by By Howard Gardner and Katie Davis

It is not that people who play video games necessarily always want to be a different person, but they want to be able to experience different things. Especially stuff that cannot happen in real life. #eme4390m2022
"At the same time, however, there is the argument about escapism – that games aren't about identification, that they are about the obliteration of the self into an immersive fantasy." I feel as though this is the case with a lot of games. #eme4390m2022 https://t.co/ViOxlyE7PA
"Gamers don’t just play games, they think about them. A lot. When they’re at school, when they’re lying in bed at night..." This is very true and I relate to this a lot, especially when it's a game I've been playing a lot of recently. #eme4390m2022 https://t.co/ZrkyjXewnK
"Almost all of these gamers identify their closest friends as gamers. Their friends influence the games they play, the way they think about these games, and even their own gamer identities." I feel this is especially apparent in teenagers. #eme4390m2022 https://t.co/ZrkyjXewnK
Reflecting at my life, this documentary invokes clarity. Honestly, I am much happier when I am only on my phone for about an hour a day. I feel more productive and I get to spend more time in the real world doing things I enjoy with people I love. #eme4390m2022@SocialDilemma_
This documentary changed the way I look at our digital identity and lifestyles in many ways, most importantly it makes me want to use social media less so these companies cannot take advantage of me as a consumer. #eme4390m2022@SocialDilemma_
