Good Morning from Germany, where Chancellor Friedrich Merz has urged citizens to ignore “scaremongers and doomsayers” and trust in the country’s ability to overcome its many challenges.
The economic backdrop is sobering. In the first 25 years of the 21st century, Germany’s economy grew by just 30%. That is less than half the pace of the United States, 25ppts slower than Spain, and 8 points behind France. Germany is also the only major economy that has yet to regain its pre-pandemic level of output.
The political stakes are rising. Five of Germany’s 16 federal states will hold elections in 2026, including key votes in September in the former communist eastern states of Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
Recent polls show the far-right AfD leading comfortably in both states, with around 40% and 38% respectively—raising the prospect that the party could lead a state government for the first time since its founding in 2013.
