Quick reminder for everyone still treating Jason Arday running 30 marathons in 35 days as though he claimed to have jogged to fucking Neptune.

Eddie Izzard did 43 marathons in 51 days in 2009.

Then 27 in 27 days in 2016.

Then another 32 marathon distances in 31 days in 2021.

This was extensively reported at the time and nobody summoned Scotland Yard to investigate whether Eddie had secretly been getting the bus.

And here is the awkward bit.

Arday’s 30-in-35 claim also has contemporaneous receipts.

There was a local newspaper report.

There was a fundraising page.

There was later television coverage.

Andy Murray publicly repeated the story after meeting him.

So perhaps, and I realise this is an outrageous suggestion, he actually did the fucking thing.

Some of Arday’s later ultrarunning claims were extraordinary and absolutely deserved scepticism.

But evidence does not work like herpes.

One dubious claim does not infect every other claim he ever made.

You cannot go:

“600 miles sounds implausible.”

Therefore:

“30 marathons never happened.”

Therefore:

“the broken leg was invented.”

Therefore:

“the fundraising was bullshit.”

Therefore:

“the entire man was a fabulist.”

That is not investigation.

That is building a prosecution by fucking vibes.

And this is exactly why I keep objecting to the word FABULIST being stamped across Arday’s entire existence like somebody processing meat at an abattoir.

Some claims were dubious.

Some were disputed.

Some remain unresolved.

And at least one of the allegedly ridiculous stories now appears to have had substantial contemporaneous corroboration all along.

So take it out of the fucking indictment, please.

You do not get to keep evidence after it starts pointing the wrong way.

Jason's thesis was examined by academic bodies and independent researchers and academics such as Chen-Wei, who all say he didn't plagarise. He made a not uncommon citation error, yet there's a Community Note lying saying he plagarised. The slander continues even after his passing
