@DavidSligar Wild that it’s known as ‘alt-ac’ where in many disciplines/countries 90% of doctorates have no pathway into academia. Higher ed is effectively the ‘alternative’.
@BlairWilliams26 It’s so bad hey. I had 3 students (out of
30ish) turn up weeks 10-12 in classes I tutored last year. Lots of causes I suspect - 1 great student I asked why she only turned up 30% of the time, turns out she was working 30 hours p/w to make ends meet 😔
@BlairWilliams26 3-5 per subject per week, although there were usually extras that were not compulsory (up to 8). Readings were about 75% papers, and then grey literature relevant for case studies/background.

This why #AcademicMentalHealth matters. Landmark study out of Australia today:
The four-year survey of 6200 university employees from 38 universities reveals they are twice as likely as other Australians to suffer “high mental stress’’.
It describes “a sector suffering high stress, exhaustion and unrelenting work pressures.”

@gavin_jd_smith Great article - ‘Based on the combined data, we found a square kilometre of farmland can contain 100 adult eastern brown snakes’ blew my mind a little bit, I didn’t expect the number to be that high 🤯
Today could be the hottest day in Australia's history, with temperatures up to 125°F (51.7°C) possible in Western Australia and potentially the highest temperature ever recorded in the Southern Hemisphere.
Just brutal extreme heat.
Starting in 2024, we congratulate recently promoted colleagues for their outstanding contributions to education, research, and service. Each has demonstrated unique impact, and Crawford is immensely proud.
Congratulations to Associate Professor Siobhan McDonnell @SiobhanADM and Associate Professor Sarah Milne @MtMajura on this special achievement!

Especially good to see recognition that the existence of the BCF is acting as a price ceiling, limiting supply in an already ‘thin’ market - noting this was already evident in 2021.
Great to see IPART recommending some of my recommendations from the 2021 Parliamentary Inquiry into the NSW BOS - including limiting the reliance on payments into the BCF given the growing offsets gap #offsets#biodiversity
