A decade after surviving #ISIS#genocide, #Yazidis who once found protection in Germany are now being deported back to #Iraq - including to the same IDP camps they once fled.

Why are Kurds in #Frankfurt and #Bonn celebrating #Newroz separately today? What political divisions are driving this split?

Sinan Antoon (@sinanantoon), Jadaliyya's Co-Editor, has published a new novel, Of Loss and Lavender!
The story follows Sami and Omar, two Iraqi men rebuilding their lives in the United States after the war.
Sami is losing his memory to dementia, and Omar is a deserter whose ear was cut off as punishment.
Of Loss and Lavender is an emotional portrait of immigrants shaped by war, showing how loss, memory, and survival intertwine across generations and geographies.

The @LemkinInstitute remembers and honors the victims of the 1988 Halabja chemical attack, the devastating effects of which are still felt today in the Kurdish Regional Government in northern Iraq.
Halabja is a reminder of the terrible ways in which civilians can become targets during war and how entire identity groups can become defined as the enemy in the minds of powerful people, who then pursue genocide against them.
As we remember the genocide in Halabja, we also wish to call attention to the ongoing need for a secure homeland for Kurds in the Middle East.

Israel evacuation orders in Beirut are most likely unlawful and are nightmarish. Entire neighborhoods, including Beirut’s southern suburbs, have been told to “leave immediately,” triggering panic and chaos as families flee with nowhere safe to go. Roads are jammed with people escaping on foot or carrying whatever they can.
At the same time, Israel’s forced evacuation orders across Lebanon have already displaced tens of thousands, with airstrikes hitting residential areas. There are thousands of civilians, older people, children, people with disabilities, who cannot evacuate, and there are no safe routes, no safe shelters, and no guarantees of protection.

As conflict & displacement rises across the globe how fair is Home office decision making for child relatives of refugees seeking reunification?

Carpet bombing densely populated civilian areas while invoking "hidden military targets" is humanitarian camouflage, and it is criminal.
In Gaza. Lebanon. Tehran.

My new @CEUDemInst working paper, in which I examine how the concept of #migrant#instrumentalisation is being used to justify the erosion of asylum seekers' rights and the rule of law - both at the national and #EU levels.

I call it genocide because IT IS genocide.
Defined by intent, not by method or means.
Visible without magnification—if we look with context, at the victims: what they share is being part of a group, as such. Because of it, they get killed, tortured, maimed, starved, raped, massacred. In dozens or hundreds daily.
Genocide is a process, not a single act.
A collective act. A criminal venture.
To end it, we must first be willing to see it.

This has been a long time coming, but here it is: Polish government—the same one that pledged to restore the rule of law—has just ‘suspended’ the constitutional right to #asylum. And it did so by executive action, bypassing procedures meant to regulate human rights restrictions.
A highly recommended article by @GraBaranowska
on the three so-called 'migrant #instrumentalization' cases against Poland, Latvia and Lithuania before the #ECtHR. What has been discussed during the hearings and what is at stake?
In today's blogpost @GraBaranowska sheds light on the recent Grand Chamber hearings on pushbacks to Belarus following Belarus' "instrumentalization of migration" to EU countries for political reasons. https://t.co/Uk9eulb3TC
Great analysis by @AlexandraAncite. I would add one point: while one might theoretically imagine ‘no violation’ of Art. 4 Prot. 4 due to an expansive reading of the ND & NT exception, there must be a violation of Art. 3 if the Court takes its absolute character seriously.
In February, I attended #ECtHR GC hearings in three 🇪🇺-#Belarus border cases involving alleged “migrant #instrumentalisation”. In my latest piece for @Verfassungsblog I show why 🇱🇻🇱🇹🇵🇱 arguments cannot justify any derogations from #asylum seekers' rights.
