Overnight into Sept 20, Ukraine’s Defense Forces struck the Moscow refinery in Kapotnya. Two primary distillation units were likely hit, ELOU-AVT-6 and Euro+, together covering 100% of primary capacity, so processing may be halted.

In June it took two raids two days apart. Now both lines were likely hit in one night 18 km from the Kremlin. Reuters later put repairs at 6+ months at best, some analysts not before 2027, so this likely hit freshly restored gear. Zelensky says a logistics site was hit too.

According to preliminary assessments, the attack on Gazpromneft’s Moscow Refinery in Kapotnya could have hit the AVT-6 primary crude distillation unit (the total processing capacity of the two units is 12 million tons of crude oil per year) and the isomerization unit (a key unit for high-octane gasoline production).

The Moscow Refinery covered 40-50% of Moscow and Moscow region's demand for gasoline and diesel fuel, as well as supplied the capital's airports with aviation fuel.

Mayor Sergei Sobyanin claimed that Russian air defenses had intercepted more than 1,600 drones “at all lines of defense,” including around 450 on approach to Moscow.

So Sobyanin eventually had to admit that not every drone was intercepted: he reported damage to a facility on the refinery grounds, where a major fire is now raging.

There were also reports of drones striking or crashing near residential buildings.

In Sofyino, a drone hit a three-story apartment building: one woman was killed and five others were injured, including two children.

In the Orekhovo-Zuyevo district, an elderly man was killed after a private house was destroyed and caught fire.

In Ramenskoye, around 400 people were evacuated from a 21-story apartment building after the roof caught fire.
