Vine grew to 200M users in 3 years. Dead by year 4. Craigslist has looked the same since 2000. Still makes $700M/year with 50 employees.
One optimized for attention. The other optimized for durability. The internet glorifies the first. The bank account rewards the second.
Hour 1: You're still in your head. Hour 2: The mental chatter quiets down. Hour 3: You start noticing things β light, sound, texture. Hour 4+: You're finally present.
Most people quit at hour 1 and wonder why walking "doesn't work for them."
The illusion of corporate stability.
How to protect yourself:
1. Build an emergency fund
2. Grow a personal brand
3. Start a side business
4. Network outside your company
Own your career, or someone else will.
If you don't know what you want to do, start by discovering what you don't want.
Itβs called "Via Negativa" (addition by subtraction).
Try anything. The moment you hate a specific task, you've gathered valuable data. Eliminate the bad, and what's left becomes your path.
The problem is that you don't know what you want to do, and figuring out what you want to do requires learning, experimentation, and effort - so you do nothing.
Waiting for external validation means outsourcing your self-worth to an algorithm and strangers on the internet.
The ultimate cheat code in the digital age?
Doing things just because you believe in them. Internal validation is the only metric you have 100% control over.
This is called "reference group neglect" in psychology.
People don't compare themselves to the world β they compare themselves to you.
When you level up, you change their reference point.
The best friends aren't threatened by that shift. They use it as fuel.
Most of your friends don't want you to fail.
They just want you to succeed at roughly the same level they do.
Anything beyond that gets uncomfortable for everyone.
Find friends who act different than that.
"I want you to win" often has an invisible asterisk:
as long as you don't win too much.
The people who genuinely celebrate your next level β not just your current one β are rare. Keep them close.
Most of your friends don't want you to fail.
They just want you to succeed at roughly the same level they do.
Anything beyond that gets uncomfortable for everyone.
Find friends who act different than that.
Yet most of us use this incredible power to hoard 42k unread emails and leave 847 tabs open.
Before unlocking the worldβs intelligence, we need to clear our own digital clutter. Silence the noise, and your device becomes the ultimate weapon.
Let me get this straight....
- You have access to basically all of the world's intelligence at your fingertips
- You can run a business from your phone and computer anywhere in the world
- You can reach anyone in the world with the words you type on a screen
- You can watch the sunrise and sunset every day and it never gets old
- You can play 2016 EDM sets in the background while you work
- You can fly on airplane to an entirely different country in a couple hours
- You can find every type of healthy food within a few minutes of your house
- You can wake up and slowly chip away toward your ideal body by lifting weights at the gym
Ignore the doomers - there has never been a better time in human history to be ALIVE
Slam an espresso and get to work
Let's have an elite day
For people-pleasers, the fear isn't rejection.
It's "If I ask, they'll think I'm selfish."
So they stay quiet, overdeliver, and hope someone notices.
No one notices.
The unlock isn't learning to askβit's unlearning the belief that your needs make you a burden.
The biggest unlock of my 20s: Ask for things. The raise. The introduction. The favor. Most people never ask because they fear rejection. But your silence guarantees it. If you've done the work, ask for the crazy thing. The world rewards those who ask. Closed mouths don't get fed.
Major life hack: Walk in nature.
Stanford study found that a 90-minute nature walk meaningfully reduced rumination and activity in the brain region associated with depression.
