A woman in her 50s with history of pterygium status postexcision presented with slow-growing black pigmented conjunctival lesion. The patient initially noted pain in the pterygium area. Four months later, enlarging black pigmentation was noted. A conjunctival lesion was surgically excised, and pathology revealed foreign material (glue and amniotic membrane graft) with septate fungal forms, adjacent to inflamed, eroded conjunctiva. Histopathologic examination was consistent with phaeohyphomycosis. Fascinating case of phaeohyphomycosis, a pigment-producing fungus, mimicking melanoma.
The patient was healing well 40 days postoperatively after voriconazole drops. From “Phaeohyphomycosis, a Pigment-Producing Fungus, Mimicked Melanoma on External Examinations” by Crystal W.
