I have had the pre-workout/energy drink conversation with multiple hockey, soccer, and baseball families today...so let me be clear here.
🚨High school & college athletes listen up🚨
If you need a pre-workout for "energy" you likely aren't:
❌Eating enough quality carb or protein
❌Hydrating or drinking sufficient fluid
❌Getting your 7-9 hours of sleep
❌Eating enough overall calories to support training & recovery demands
Consuming the level of caffeine ( 120-300 mg +) in pre-workouts, energy drinks like:
✖️Celsius
✖️Bang
✖️C4
✖️Red bull
✖️Prime
On a regular basis is extremely harmful to your health.
Too much caffeine (> 200+ mg ) in one dose or in a short period of time can lead to:
❌Heart palpations
❌Anxiety & mood disorders
❌Poor appetite = inability to consume enough kcal
❌Depression & poor sleep (caffeine has a 6 hour half life and it will still be in your system at bed time if you consume in the afternoon/evening)
Pre-workouts/caffeine can't replace the fundamentals. Back to the basics with real food.
4 Things I Wish Every Athlete Knew:
1) Poor recovery catches up to you.
2) When you work to make every rep
look as good as possible, you find
amazing results & less injury.
3) Your back shouldn't hurt after
heavy deadlifts or squats.
4) Cortisone shots don't fix anything.
I’m excited for this new chapter in my life, but I am going to miss you all! To my students and athletes, please continue working to be the best version of yourself! I may not be physically there but I’m still cheering you all on and can’t wait to see what you accomplish! 💛💚
Now that I’ve had some time to sit & process it all. I want to thank everyone at DHS that I had the privilege to work with for the last 5 years. You were my first family in Florida and you helped me grow tremendously as a person and a professional.
If you don’t provide your body the proper recovery it needs through sleep, nutrition and hydration, then you’ll never see all of the gains you can get from your training!
DHS student athletes! Please take a minute to check out this QR code which has some basic exercises for body parts that tend to have aches and pains throughout the sports season! Come see me if you're having any issues or have any questions! :)
Coaches before you get mad about athletes "hanging out" in the athletic training room remember; The athletic training room is the only place athletes feel they can be 100% genuine. It's their refuge from parents, SO's, teammates, and even you. Let them have that space to just be.
Student-athletes, you are students first and athletes second! Take pride in showing up to class everyday and getting your work completed. You should be putting in just as much work in the classroom as you do on the field/court.
Just some food for thought on this lovely Thursday
