I wanted to add something: I do still love music/band, but as I was leaving hs I wanted nothing to do with it because of my bad experiences, & I knew that there were people involved with college band that would just make it worse. So, still love music, just was ruined at the time
It truly saddens me how many young people (esp girls) have had such horrible experiences with marching band, ESP drum line. Instructors (or other students) that are inappropriate towards these girls, while others turn a blind eye. It makes me sick to hear story after story.
My love for marching band and drum line was crushed because of this, and I am still recovering as an adult. I just really, truly hope that the marching band culture, especially in WV, is changing.
I’m tired of seeing testimonies- we need to do better.
@Jewchaynz At the end of the day my anger is mostly towards instructors. Like you said, they certainly facilitated the poor behaviors of students at times, but it got to the point where they were the ones abusing their power towards students. And THAT is the most inexcusable imo.
@Jewchaynz No I absolutely agree. We can’t expect kids to fully understand their actions, but there is no excuse for instructors ignoring signs or even ENABLING the actions of students or other instructors. Too many adults knew about what was going on and did nothing, or facilitated it.
