A TRUE-LIFE STORY ❤️🥹

Yesterday morning, I was travelling in a Keke Napep when a little girl stopped us. She looked at the driver and said:

“Keke driver, good morning.”

He replied, “Good morning. How are you?”

She said, “Alhamdulillah.”

He asked her, “Where are you going?”

She replied, “School gate. Can you take me there? How much is the fare?”

He told her, “₦300.”

She became quiet. She lowered her head, and her eyes became red as if she was about to cry.

Then she said:

“Keke Napep driver, I only have ₦100. Will you take me?”

He replied:

“No, honestly, I can't. You have to pay ₦300.”

She quietly said:

“Okay, no problem. You can go. Even if you take me, I don't know who will bring me back home. This ₦100 is the only money my mother gave me.”

Then she said something that really touched me:

“I will just have to walk. My mother doesn't have any more money. I put my trust in Allah. Good people have not disappeared. There are still people who love the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. If one person doesn't take me, another person will.”

The driver then said:

“Okay, keep your ₦100. I'll take you for free.”

So we continued our journey.

As we travelled, I looked at her and asked:

“Is your father still alive?”

She replied:

“Yes. My father is a soldier. Whenever he goes away, it takes a long time before he returns.”

I asked her another question:

“Who normally gives you money for transportation to school every day?”

She said:

“My father sends money to them at the end of every month. But after they buy food and other necessities, the money they give me for transportation to school is what remains.”

I asked again:

“So, has the money finished now? What happened?”

She replied:

“My mother became sick and was taken to the hospital. She was put on a drip and was also given blood. They called my father and told him what had happened. He said he honestly didn't have any money because the month was already far gone.”

She continued:

“So they sold the food they had bought and also used the money meant for my Keke Napep fare to pay for my mother's treatment. That's why I'm walking to school today.”

I was asking her all these questions with so much emotion that I almost cried. 🥲

Then I asked:

“Do you attend an Islamic school?”

She said:

“Yes. When we were in Kano, I attended an Islamiyya school. But since we moved back to Abuja, I haven't been enrolled in one. My mother teaches me how to read the Qur'an at home every day.”

With every question I asked, she gave a clear and intelligent answer.

I was honestly amazed. She was such a young girl, yet she spoke with so much knowledge, maturity and understanding.

When we finally reached the school gate, I had ₦1,500 in my pocket. I decided to give her ₦1,000.

But as she was about to get down and leave, the Keke driver said:

“I heard everything you two have been talking about. So keep your ₦1,000.”

He called the girl back.

Then he brought out ₦7,000 and gave it to her.

He said:

“Keep this money somewhere safe so you don't lose it. When you get home, give it to your mother and tell her to buy ₦5,000 worth of food for the family. Keep the remaining ₦2,000 for yourself so you can continue paying for your Keke Napep fare until your father receives his salary.”

Then he added:

“When you get home, tell your mother that someone who loves the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave you this money.”

He then brought out another ₦500 and gave it to her.

He said:

“Keep this too. Add it to the ₦100 you already have. Use ₦300 to buy breakfast, and keep ₦300 for your Keke fare when school closes so you can get back home.”

After the girl left, I looked at the man and asked:

“Brother, are you also a soldier, or perhaps a government worker?”

He laughed and said:

“No, wallahi. I'm neither. I sell soup ingredients. In fact, I'm on my way to the market right now.”
