Since October 2023, Abiy has repeatedly claimed—both in video statements and written remarks—that he has explained his concerns about how #Ethiopia “lost its ports.” Yet to this day, no one has produced a single piece of evidence showing that he raised this issue in the way he suggests.

Looking back at this interview Abiy Ahmed gave in Davos in 2019, it is striking that eventhough the host prompted him oddly by pointing out that Ethiopia, with more than 100 million people, has no ports, and then asked follow-up questions about his first visit to #Eritrea.

He had the global stage at that moment. He could have even implied regret that Ethiopia is landlocked, or expressed concern about lacking sea access—let alone frame it as an existential issue for the country.

But listen to his response. He said he felt safer traveling to #Asmara, Eritrea than coming to #Davos. He went on to state, “The issue of conflict in our region is the ego of leaders… and when we fight each other, we end up begging for food.”

Nowhere did he describe Ethiopia’s landlocked status as a crisis, an injustice, or an existential threat.

This stark contrast between his earlier statements and his current disastrous trajectory raises serious questions about credibility, and about the direction in which he is leading Ethiopia.
