I remember when my middle son wanted to come with me to Muay Thai and Jui Jitsu class. I thought originally he was showing interest until one day I asked him why he was curious? He told me he was getting bullied at school and wanted to defend himself. I was ecstatic. He to it quickly. I sat him down a few weeks later and told him under no circumstances will he start fights. But he certainly could finish one. If anyone steps into his bubble, he has every right to defend himself and he wouldn’t get in trouble with his mom and I. Sure enough, the next week I got a phone call from the school. He was being suspended for fighting.

I got to the school and my son told me he was pushed into his locker by his bully. He turned around and pieced him the fuck up. Apparently, that’s a no no. I asked to see the video footage, sure enough, my son was minding his own business when unprovoked, the bully two hands to the back shoved him hard into the locker. I asked what about the bully? His he getting a suspension? Nope. I lost it. I reminded these school folks that they were young once and know exactly what it’s like to be bullied and having to defend themselves. It’s how we were brought up. It added character because the lesson learned is that when you stand down to bully, they keep on coming until something drastic happens. But once you let a bully know that you’re going to fight back? The fact that the bully is going unpunished for unprovoked behavior, but my son is getting suspended for defending himself? Yeah, that’s not happening. I have zero problem taking it to the superintendent as well as hiring a lawyer in order to get justice. I certainly took it to the superintendent 4 weeks later after my son was suspended and my lawyer came with. He did all the talking, and my son’s record was cleared and the bully was suspended for the rest of the year. He had to repeat the 7th grade because of it. As parents, you must have your kids back. Especially when you’re right
