In short, this type of move would only accomplish begging a wholesale slaughter of any ground troops they'd try to run the gauntlet with.

It doesn't take a genius to understand that making columns of soldiers either attempt to cross +400 miles on foot or in vehicles would leave them 100% exposed, making them EXTREMELY vulnerable to detection from above, as we have complete domination of the sky from both space (satellites) and strikes by US aircraft, drones, and precision munitions.
