A 21-year-old muslim IT worker in the Netherlands was fired only a few days into his new job after he refused to shake hands with a female team leader because of his religious beliefs.

He later sent an email saying he didn’t mean to upset anyone, but his employer still ended his contract that same day saying he “didn’t fit” the job.

The case went to court, and the judge ruled that the dismissal was discriminatory, especially since he was expected to work remotely and shaking hands wasn’t part of his job. The Dutch court ordered the employer to pay him €34,000 in compensation.
