The 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union will take place on 11–12 February 2026, followed by the Assembly of Heads of State and Government on 13–14 February 2026.

Opening statements at the Executive Council will be delivered by:
1. H.E Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission
2. H.E Gedion Timothewos, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia
3. Claver Gatete, Executive Secretary of UNECA
4. H.E Téte António, Chairperson of the Executive Council and Angola Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The Council will then proceed into a closed session to adopt the agenda and organisation of work, consider key reports, review AU participation in the G20, and conduct elections and appointments to AU Organs #Agenda2063.

AU Commission Chairperson H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf reaffirmed the AU’s solidarity with Somalia and called for sustainable financing for AUSSOM, while supporting Somali-led peace and security efforts.

The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, joined the Heads of State & Government, leaders of the Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs) to the AU Support & Stabilisation Mission in #Somalia (AUSSOM), together with the leadership of the Federal Republic of Somalia, at the 2nd Extraordinary Summit held in Kampala, #Uganda.

The Chairperson @ymahmoudali expressed his profound appreciation to the Government & people of the Republic of Uganda for their generous hospitality & the excellent organisation of the Summit. He commended H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for convening the Summit& for Uganda's leadership & longstanding contribution to peace, security & stability in Somalia & the wider region.

He paid tribute to the Troop Contributing Countries & honoured the bravery, professionalism & sacrifice of the military, police & civilian personnel serving under AUSSOM, whose dedication continues to support Somalia's stabilisation & state-building efforts.

Reaffirming the AU's solidarity with the Government & people of Somalia, the Chairperson underscored the Union's commitment to accompanying Somalia on its path towards lasting peace, security & development.

He further stressed the importance of strengthening collaboration with international partners to secure predictable, adequate & sustainable financing for AUSSOM, while supporting Somalia's leadership & ownership of its peace, security & stabilisation agenda.

On the margins of the Summit, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf held a bilateral meeting with H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to exchange views on the evolving situations in the Great Lakes region & South Sudan. The Chairperson sought President Museveni's continued engagement & support in advancing inclusive dialogue& regional efforts aimed at achieving sustainable peace, security & stability in both contexts.

During this morning's opening of the 49th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU), the Chairperson of the AU Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, welcomed the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Members of the Permanent Representatives' Committee (PRC), Commissioners heads of RECs, & other distinguished delegates. He congratulated H.E. Amb. Édouard Bizimana, Minister of Foreign Affairs & Development Cooperation of the Republic of #Burundi, on his Chairmanship of the Executive Council & assured him of the Commission's full support during his tenure.

The Chairperson noted that the Executive Council was meeting at a time of heightened global uncertainty, characterised by complex geopolitical developments with significant implications for Africa's economies.
Referring to the conflict in the Middle East, including the Strait of Hormuz, he underscored that the Commission remains closely seized of the evolving situation & it's impact & continues to provide regular analysis & advice to the Union's policy organs to support timely & appropriate collective responses.

On regional peace & security, he expressed concern over the continued spread of terrorism & violent extremism across parts of the continent. He recalled his recent solidarity visits to countries of the Sahel, reaffirming the AU's commitment to supporting Member States in addressing these shared security challenges.

On public health, Mr. Youssouf highlighted the #Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which continues to pose serious humanitarian & health challenges. He conveyed the Commission's condolences to the families of those who had lost their lives & reaffirmed the AU's solidarity with the Government & people of the DRC. He further noted that the AU's @AfricaCDC is coordinating & mobilising the continental response in close collaboration with the relevant national, regional & international partners.
Addressing institutional & financial matters, the Chairperson expressed appreciation to the PRC for its continued commitment to ensuring the effective functioning of the Commission.

He also thanked the AU's international partners for their support to the implementation of the Union's programmes & priorities.

The Chairperson stressed, however, that achieving the aspirations of Agenda 2063 will require significantly greater financial mobilisation, estimated at approximately US$2 billion. In this regard, he emphasised that the Commission's responsibility is to foster the political, policy & institutional environment necessary to attract increased public & private investment for Africa's transformation.

He affirmed that the Commission would continue to utilise all available multilateral platforms & partnerships to advance and advocate for Africa's priorities and expectations on the global stage.

On institutional reform, Mr Youssouf informed the Executive Council that the implementation of the Skills, Audit & Competency Assessment (SACA) process had been completed. He further reaffirmed the Commission's commitment to prudent financial management, strengthened accountability and results-based management in the delivery of its mandate.

In conclusion, he called upon Member States to accelerate the ratification of outstanding AU legal instruments to strengthen the Union's institutional & legal architecture. He also appealed for the continued support of African candidates seeking election to positions within international organisations, in accordance with the decisions submitted to the Executive Council for consideration.
