Rather than minimum pricing, why not negotiate a modest rise in alcohol duty (therefore instead of increasing supermarket profits, increasing gov. revenue to be spent on eg programmes to help alcoholics). Better still, Scotland or the UK should nationalise the sale of alcohol in
@cuchulainn1@itsjohncrotty British ownership of the Argentine railways did prove controversial though. Argentina was considered almost an honorary part of the British Empire for a while - Britain owned the railways that were mainly used to export corned beef & the like to Britain.
@itsjohncrotty There was a bit of industrialisation in the north, to be fair. Over in Britain at least, my impression is that heavy industry mainly concentrated near deposits of coal & iron ore, which Ireland unfortunately didn't have the same amount of.
@BelgSportsFan@vlot_m@theiaincameron A bit like Scotland & England in that respect, I suppose, although we have Berwick as a bit of a hybrid - technically in England, but lots of Scottish families or at least families with ties to Scotland there, so the Berwick dialect can be a bit of a mixture at times.
@vlot_m@theiaincameron Neighbours are generally at least somewhat similar, in my experience, although I suppose humans being the pack animals we are, we don't usually like admitting it...
@Womban1972@BlackIslePMD That's mostly been my anecdotal experience too, but with a handful of exceptions. I donโt blame them either way. Identity is quite personal as well as tribal.
@Orest_Baback@pwk Perhaps. At the moment though, Poland has been one of your main sources of aid in your on-going war, so pissing them off seems like a bad idea to me. It's obviously Ukrainians' decision what they call their military units, but you have lost some of the goodwill you had before.
@Orest_Baback@pwk Perhaps. I hope that some kind of compromise can be reached. I donโt entirely blame Poles or Ukrainians for having different perspectives when it comes to history. Every nation has its own story. I do personally think that in the current climate the choice of name was unwise.
@Orest_Baback@pwk Many of your own country's scholars disagree. Until the recent debacle, thanks to the shared enemy today, progress was being made in reaching more understanding between Poland & Ukraine over history. At this point, if you want to alienate your allies & make Putin's victory more
@MikeScheider_@pwk they took part in massacres of roughly 100,000 Poles. I think it's safe to say they were very much an ethnic nationalist movement, not a civic one...
@MikeScheider_@pwk The UPA was founded by the OUN. A bit like the Chetniks, at times they fought against the Nazis & at other times they collaborated with them eg late in the war, they decided to collaborate with the Nazis in preparation for the coming Soviet invasion, but also this is the era when
