Many of us have friends and colleagues affected by the devastating wildfires in the Los Angeles area. While this event is heartbreaking, it's important to remember that wildfires are a global phenomenon impacting many regions like tropical Africa every year—often with little media attention, though their consequences can reach far beyond their origin.

Regardless of the debates over climate change’s role, many wildfires can happen within the natural variability of the Earth system. This is a global challenge that demands a global response.

Flash droughts, a rapidly intensifying subset of droughts, cause extensive damage. Simulations of soil moisture show a significant increase in flash droughts across the U.S., interestingly when incorporating satellite-derived vegetation data.
