Para 66: "Like adults, children experienced distinct harms–based on their gender, age, ethnicity, religion, among other identifiers. However, children’s exposure to institutionalized systems of oppression, and the harms committed in service of maintaining such a system..
Boys, raised in a governance structure that legitimizes dehumanization of women & girls, + suffering from a deficit of educational & economic opportunities, are left vulnerable to abuse & radicalization, sowing seeds for security concerns extending beyond Afghanistan’s borders."
Para 65: "Children risk experiencing human rights abuses throughout childhood w/ profound physical and psychological implications. This is esp true for girls, given that they are being denied equal access to education and are consequently at a heightened risk of other abuses..
What conception of the world, and of themselves, do girls have when they have no memories of women thriving independently from men? And what type of men do boys, raised within an institutionalized regime which has systematically disempowered women and girls, grow into?
Para. 51 @SR_Afghanistan: "What will be the effect–on all Afghans, but particularly on girls and boys–of the erasure of strong female role models outside of the home?...
"The transgenerational impact.. will be immense and enduring. The Taliban’s institutionalized gender oppression is depriving #Afghanistan of its future women engineers, journalists, lawyers, biologists, politicians, and poets... a profound and mounting loss to an entire nation."
He warns the denial of access to education increases risks of forced marriages and debt bondage, particularly for families under financial pressure. Coerced conjugal relationships " may also entail other violations, including rape, torture, forced pregnancy and forced labour."
Starting with the denial of access to #education, @SR_Afghanistan states, " has a pernicious effect, curtailing the acquisition of earning power, key to women’s personal empowerment, their independence within their families, and their very survival."
For those focussed on abuses and crimes against and directly affecting #children, @SR_Afghanistan report's intersectional approach illuminated profound harms, visible and obscured to both Afghan girls and boys - and the transgenerational impacts that will affect us all.
The report of @SR_Afghanistan on "The phenomenon of an institutionalized system of discrimination, segregation, disrespect for human dignity and exclusion of women and girls" is now out!

One of the (many) fantastic and thought provoking conversations at yesterday’s @4GenderJustice conference on Reproductive Violence in ICL. @akila_rad and @VOosterveld shared valuable insights on the negotiations for the Crimes Against Humanity Convention.
It is the honor of my life to get to work on the #EndGenderApartheid Campaign with Afghan + Iranian Women. Read about the legal brief penned by @SaretaAshraph@SLPJustice + @akilaGJC pushing for recognition of #genderapartheid as a Crime Against Humanity 👇
