Bryan Mbeumo on his conversation with Bruno Fernandes after Manchester United lost to Chelsea:

🗣️ Mbeumo:

“Bruno was very sad and emotional after the game ended, he came to me and said ‘Bryan, we ruined it, we killed our momentum in the second half’

“I totally understood what he was trying to say because I was also on the pitch and part of the problem.

“He was really emotional because we had a very good first half but we lost momentum going into the second half.

“And unluckily for us, the red card given to Lisandro Martinez killed every extra hope we had left.

“Having Lisandro on the pitch would've been very key to our comeback.

“But we can't begin to cry about a red card and losing now, what we can do is learn from this and focus on our next game.

“And with the way we have been having consecutive bad games, I was not surprised Bruno was emotional at full time.

“Being the captain, the pressure on him at the moment is very high.

“But now we would keep our cool and focus on the next game.”

I feel sorry for the supporters. They’ve watched managers come and go, listened to promises and waited for things to improve.

“Manchester United supporters should be discussing Champions League qualification, not worrying about relegation.

“They are level on points with the team in the relegation zone and only staying above them on goal difference. These numbers should embarrass everybody.

“The Glazers must sell, and INEOS must take responsibility. If they cannot put the right people in charge, they should question whether they are the right people to lead this club.

“This club needs a complete change at the top. Bring in people with a proper football vision and stop treating Manchester United like an experiment.

“You can lose a football match, but you cannot keep losing the identity and standards of an institution like Manchester United.

“I’m genuinely worried about Manchester United. Not just because they’ve lost again, but because this club is being run without a clear direction.

“Look at Andrey Santos’ failed challenge on Morgan Rogers before Rogers got above Lammens to score. That’s embarrassing defending.

“Honestly, I wasn’t happy with what happened. It was too cheap, too easy to give the ball away in that position, especially in a game where every mistake can cost you.

“I went straight to Bruno because I expected better from him. He’s our captain, he’s one of the most experienced players in the dressing room, and he’s someone we look to when things become difficult.

“I asked him, ‘Bruno, what were you thinking? Where was your head? Is this how you’re going to lead us? We cannot keep making these mistakes and expect to win football matches.’

“He looked at me and said, ‘Kobbie, are you alright? I tried to play the ball across. How can you put all the blame on me?’

“I told him, ‘You’re asking how it’s your fault? Bruno, it is your responsibility to recognise the situation. You cannot force that pass and then act surprised when we get punished. You’re blaming everybody else, but sometimes you need to look at what you’re doing to this team. Wake up, Bruno!’

“He wasn’t happy with what I said, and I could see that. But I wasn’t going to pretend everything was fine just because he’s the captain.

“I walked away because I was genuinely frustrated. A player of Bruno’s quality should understand those situations better. We need him to make the right decisions, especially when the team is under pressure.

“I’m not questioning his talent or what he has done for this club. Nobody can take that away from him. But being captain comes with responsibility, and that responsibility doesn’t disappear when you make a mistake.

“We cannot keep talking about wanting to compete with the best teams and then give away possession in dangerous areas. Chelsea don’t need invitations to hurt you. They’ll punish you.

“After the incident, we still had to concentrate on the game. There was no time to stand around arguing, but I wanted him to understand how frustrated some of us were.

“I respect Bruno as our captain, but respect doesn’t mean keeping quiet when something is wrong. If we cannot challenge each other in the dressing room or on the pitch, then we will never become the team Manchester United are supposed to be.”
