RIP Sam Neill (1947-2026)
Sam Neill on why "The Piano" (1993) is an important movie in Cinema history:
"I don’t think I can overestimate how important 'The Piano' (1993) is for me in hindsight. It sits on my funny old CV like a medal on my chest. It wasn’t my film. It was Jane Campion's. I wasn’t the star of the film. That was Holly Hunter. But there is honour to be found in the second fiddle. Or fourth. No one notices you much, you don’t get nominated for things. But you served. I was there in an important feminist film. I was there on the front line in an important New Zealand film. Neither of these labels does the film justice. It’s a work of art. And look, that tiny little figure in the fabric— see down there on the right—that’s me. It’s a film that will always have a place in cinema history. And I served in it."

@jjh_esq@LacyMB@DCrowsNest the old translation changed it too. your translation changes it. our words can never map entirely onto theirs because it was a completely different culture. all translations are inaccurate. coloured by your own bias of what it means. hence all problems with all old texts,
@jjh_esq@LacyMB@DCrowsNest all translations carry a bias to the age they were created. there's a new translation of the original Greek that unpicks all the lazy assumptions made over the years that make us conform the story to our own cultural biases. it's a weird ass story with alien characters. enjoy.
@Post40_ and if something happened to you, I'm sure you think your brother/sister isn't obligated to look after your kids either? to the orphanage with them, they're not their extended family's responsibility!

@cinemafrances decided to read the book to understand this movie. it was completely different. much more about the warts and all beneath the facade. but the movie was all surface. more fetishisation and sexualising of her mythologized image, exploitative, and nothing about the real woman at all
the number of men on here telling me how much more important the opinion of a director is than an art director, whilst I am telling them simultaneously that I am a director, is beyond ironic
@danielpmalito@HasimpKing where did you get 40 hours from? film is paid by the day, and it's frequently 12-14 hour days, if not more, and 6 day weeks. that's more like 80 hours a week?
@BB1001236514 the Matrix famously gave Reeves back end shares which he then redistributed to cast and crew. just to show other systems are possible. gosh it's been a while since I had a twitter argument. but did you google the 'more than one' Indie hits yet?
@BB1001236514 this story has happened before, Blair Witch, Matrix, etc etc. it will happen again. meanwhile increasingly people struggle at grass roots level to enter and stay in the industry. we don't know how many Indie films we've already been denied b/c of worsening of conditions
