@Floogendorf@TheDuchessZone Even people who are in sound mind and not addicted can struggle to manage jumping the hoops of the UK benefits system. Eg I once had two weeks IS cancelled because I told them I had done two hours work. They took offence at that for some reason.

@Plugalug1@QuayleAlice@Green_IOM Well some green policies would actually reduce energy poverty. If they were properly targeted. I would propose improve the building regs for a start. German and Norwegian homes are much more efficient than most UK or Man homes.
@Plugalug1@QuayleAlice@Green_IOM I can't think of much to invest in that would be better than avoiding multi metre sea level rise. Can you think of the cost of having to deal with multi metre sea level rise? Even just for the Isle of Man? The effects on infrastructure and property would be very expensive indeed.
@Plugalug1@QuayleAlice@Green_IOM From the IPCC 1.5 degrees report - Around 1.5 °C to 2 °C of global warming," irreversible instabilities could be triggered in Antarctica and "Greenland ice sheet, resulting in multi-metre rise in sea level."[29]. It really is a good idea to try and avoid this.
@kahs1969@Floogendorf@TheDuchessZone Child hunger in the UK. One in 4 UK children faced some food deprivation over the period of the study.
I'd say that is remarkable levels of poverty. Not as bad as Haita though. I don't think the people of the UK should be grateful for that.

@kahs1969@Floogendorf@TheDuchessZone The ONS website isn't letting me search for deaths by malnutrition. However a BMJ-published study indicates that cuts to health and social care from 2010/11 to 2014/15 caused an extra 57,550 deaths.
@Floogendorf@TheDuchessZone People in the UK starve to death regularly through lack of a safety net. Increasing numbers of beggars and homeless on the streets. That is astonishing in a country that calls itself a rich modern first world democracy. Saying it's better than Haiti isn't very impressive.
Around £220 million* was spent on the Isle of Man last year to pay for energy, mostly fossil fuels. A strong argument for investing in renewable energy and energy efficiency.
*Figures calculated using official energy consumption data from IOM in Numbers, and OFT energy prices.
