Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart is a heart-wrenching reminder of how many young people are forced to grow up too fast as they strive for normality in the midst of disfunction. You never know what people have dealt with or are going through so be patient, kind and understanding.

Reading Abandoned by Anya Peters helped me understand why people become homeless. This book changed my outlook and I now make a conscious effort to acknowledge homeless individuals by offering food or simply showing recognition, so they don’t feel as invisible as Anya did.

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman explores the themes of kindness, loneliness and the power of human connections, and helped me understand how the world can be for people who are socially isolated and lonely. The protagonist, Eleanor, will stay with me for life!
