PhD candidate at Cornell, MSc from Ohio State | @SMBC Jamaica & @HubbardBrookNH | studying the impacts of environmental change on migratory birds ๐ฅ๐ฆ| she/her
Something incredible happened today! I saw a strange bird foraging near a net, unlike any other migrant we see in Jamaica. I lifted my binos and IT WAS A KIRTLANDS WARBLER ๐ฑ This is the first known record of a KIWA in JA. I still canโt believe it! #ornithology#JamBirds2019
Hey #ornithology peeps! Iโll be presenting some of my PhD work on breeding and fall migration phenology of the Hubbard Brook Black-throated Blues ๐ during the Wed poster session at #AOS_SCO23 ๐ฃ Itโs got #warblers, itโs got #MotusWTS, itโs got it all ๐ come say hi!
I wrote my dissertation with joy + sanity intact because my local cafe held me in life-affirming community. They protected my space where I wrote 6x/wk. So many regulars cheered me on. An older patron once whispered "You're a genius" (I'm not) in my ear, and shared poetry๐ฅนโฆ
@tbh_i_dont_know Congrats! Huge accomplishment! My first paper from my Masters came out 3 years after I defended, so I mean 9 months is fantastic and really common for research degrees, btw ๐ donโt let Cornell fool you!
This really is no joke. People act like toxic environments in research is the price we have to pay for genius to succeed. But have we considered that there might be more success in positive work environments where everyone feels properly supported? /1

Tagging songbirds is one of the most enjoyable parts of my research ๐ this past week I had the pleasure of training this years crew on how to safely and effectively tag our Black-throated Blue Warblers breeding at Hubbard Brook #ornithology#fallmigration#phdlife

This stunning male Blackburnian Warbler is a pleasant surprise in terms of bycatch birds in the Hubbard Brook forest! ๐งก They are usually so hesitant to come down from the canopy! ๐ฒ
The first female Black-throated Blue Warbler we caught at Hubbard Brook this summer ๐
She is everything. I love these birds ๐ฅบ

In honor of today being the first official day of the 2023 summer field season studying Black-throated Blue Warblers at Hubbard Brook, enjoy this very niche meme that I made ๐๐ชบ #ornithology
Night flight! Tracking data reveal when and why songbirds begin their massive migrations โ during the darkest stages of twilight and, like mini-meteorologists, songbirds track atmospheric pressure to ensure safe and efficient flights. @SMBC Learn more: https://t.co/Cd9yp2Zie2
Check out the new paper drop! A fun collab featuring tracking data from 8 species, including the one and only Swainson's Warbler! We found that 90% of individuals likely initiating long-distance migratory flights departed within 69 min (nice) of civil dusk

Our team @CornellBirds is looking for a #postdoc interested in using @Team_eBird data and data products to monitor and evaluate #biodiversity and ecosystem health using birds as indicators!
