I spent two weeks in the US recently, mostly in SF and New York, trying to understand the current state of crypto and AI.
On AI: SF is where most of the action is. The talent density of AI founders is unreal. I even ran into some friends and IIT Bombay batchmates who have gone all in on AI. Capital is everywhere and founders are chasing very ambitious bets.
But like every market and cycle, there is froth too. For every founder solving real problems with real conviction, there are some who are just riding the trend. There is a lot of leverage building up, with a surprising amount of debt flowing into AI companies. I think we will be due for a significant correction in AI over the next 1.5–2 years.
The ambition is still real, though. The world is talking about AGI and physical AI. Both are trends I got to learn a lot about and came back very excited about.
On crypto: A different mood currently. New capital isn't coming in, and many VCs aren't actively looking at the space right now. But the builders are maturing. The asset class is growing up. Founders are moving to multi-asset plays like tokenisation and use cases like prediction markets. In fact, I saw so many ads for prediction market apps everywhere! Very interesting times.
So what does this mean for Indian founders?
Sam Altman recently said that now is an amazing time to start up. He is right. If I was starting up from scratch now, this is how I would approach it.
Any Indian founder is not starting from zero. A lot of the talent building in SF is already Indian. We have a massive home market, world-class digital rails like UPI, and one of the largest crypto user bases in the world. We also have proof it works. We shouldn't try to copy-paste SF, though. Our capital, regulation and customers are different.
Four things I would do myself:
1. Focus beats ambition. Don't chase SF's "boil the ocean" bets. Pick one painful, monetisable problem and win it.
2. Revenue is oxygen. Capital is scarcer here and new money isn't flowing into crypto as much and even with AI hot in India, the move is to build for profitability early rather than raise on a story. The companies that outlast every cycle, here and abroad, are the ones that made money early.
3. Play to India's edge, sell to the world. Use our talent density and low burn on real-world problems: physical AI in manufacturing, agri and logistics, tokenisation and remittances in crypto. And go global from day one.
4. Be compliance-first and patient: India's tax and regulatory reality can be a constraint but also an opportunity to build slowly and responsibly. Ignore the froth and build to survive the quiet years: the teams that do will be able to scale for the long run.
Indian founders that are close to real problems, building lean, playing the long game have just as much a chance of building lasting, generational companies as anyone in SF. We just have to play our own game! 🫡
