Al-Hajjaj's notorious khutba in Kufa in 694 CE followed a blueprint set decades earlier by Ziyad ibn Abihi in Basra.

In 665 CE, Muʿawiya (ra) charged Ziyad with restoring order to a lawless Basra.

His speech upon entering the city which threatened Basrans with harsh reprisals and collective punishment became known as al-Batrā, 'the Truncated Speech', since he omitted the customary opening praise of Allah and blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ.

Ziyad would go on to transform Basra into one of the most stable Umayyad administrative centres, so effectively that Muʿawiya (ra) later made him governor of all Iraq and viceroy over the Empire's eastern territories.

I have really been diving into Surat Al Israa for the past few days and its theme seems to be how circumstances can corrupt and how its easier to be connected to God and not be oppressive when you dont have the power to oppress or be corrupt.

It should have you asking: are you not corrupt because youre a good person or because you’ve not been tested with power?

Is your corruption just on a much a smaller scale because your powers are smaller?

It starts of with a warning for the Children of Israel, that they’ve been oppressed but again and again be given tests where they have the power, and it’ll be seen how they’ll act then.

It does that over and over again, it even tells that the Prophet (pbuh) was put under unbearable circumstances that would have broken anyone, to perhaps compromise his message, include some polytheism to just appease the Kuffar but he remained steadfast.

It also uses examples that anyone can relate to, like this verse below and what a beautiful and deep theme that is.
