To-day, Easter Sunday, for the very first time, after 4 weeks of social restrictions & economic pain, #Covid_19ireland has finally overtaken alcohol in number of deaths this year. 309 deaths related to alcohol, 320 for #COVID.
Just a reminder that in normal times, 10% of our health service budget is spent dealing with preventable alcohol harm. 1,500 beds are occupied by preventable alcohol harm each night.
The drink industry opposed every provision of the Public Health Alcohol Bill.

Why are Irish lives of such lesser value @SimonHarrisTD that we must wait for progress from another jurisdiction? Both Scotland and Wales put their citizens lives before retailer profit despite sharing substantial land borders with a jurisdiction without MUP.
This is partly why this huge gift we gave Diageo is so important for them. This morning, a bunch of kids, our Irish kids and kids in the UK watched this brand be glamourised, had a positive emotional connection made and we repeat the cycle we've all been put through ourselves.
Shortage of hospital beds.
1500 beds occupied every day by patients with alcohol related issues.
Children's hospital costing in excess of €1.73 billion.
Cost of alcohol harm to the state €2.3 billion per year.
Alcohol abuse not an issue for any political party.
Just saying...
@StefPreissner Raw honest article by @stefpreissner on her relationship with drink. Maybe awareness of our toxic relationship with alcohol is improving ? Well worth reading
@AnncJones @MarianKeyes Dont get us started! Yes, it would be better to have both. But emotional intelligence, kindness & compassion like Marians trumps academic knowledge every time. Plus academics often view through their own world view not the persons.
If @MarianKeyes ever gets bored writing de books she'd should turn to counselling. Wonderful kind practical advice for all of us finding Christmas difficult. Keep this video handy so you can look it any time.
@Alifewise @MarianKeyes I love those Christmas mince pies with custard but haven't had one as yet due to tight finances. But this short fillum has helped me so very much be ok about it all. Things will get better & I'll be able to bake my own any time of the year & eat as many as I want!❤
Last week's 'Growing Up in Ireland: at 20 years old' survey presents interesting findings:
93% of 20 year olds are drinking; 21% drank 2-3 times a week #GUIConf19
These are Ireland's leading and the EU28's No.1 binge drinkers; 15 of 100 are facing dependency issues.

Children are trained to drink by observing the way alcohol is treated by the adults around them. The way those adults express emotions or not, the way they handle stress. Advertising plays it's part, society has responsibility too
