I have witnessed many dark days, but none as heartbreaking as the day Azerbaijan’s flag was lowered in mourning. December 25, 2024, will forever be remembered… 

Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8243, an Embraer E190AR, took off from Baku bound for Grozny, carrying 67 passengers and crew. Tragically, the flight crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan, killing 38 people. Among the 29 survivors, many suffered serious injuries.

Initial reports suggested a bird strike or bad weather caused the crash. However, further investigations point to the high possibility of a Russian air defense missile striking the plane. It’s believed the aircraft was hit by shrapnel from a Pantsir-S system responding to Ukrainian drone activity.

Survivors recalled hearing a loud explosion before the plane lost control. The flight’s black box has been recovered, and investigators are working to determine the truth behind this tragedy.

In response, President Ilham Aliyev declared a national day of mourning to honor the victims. This disaster has raised pressing concerns about air safety and the risks of military actions near civilian airspace.

… Though time may ease the grief, the pain of this loss will remain. Azerbaijan mourns the lives lost and demands answers. Moreover, this tragedy must serve as a reminder to prevent such a loss from ever happening again.
