⚡⚡International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances
Observed annually on August 30⚡⚡
Enforced disappearance stands among the most egregious violations of human rights. It occurs when a person is arrested, detained, or abducted by state agents, or by individuals acting with the authorization, support, or acquiescence of the state, followed by a refusal to acknowledge the deprivation of liberty or to disclose the fate or whereabouts of the person concerned. This deliberate act places the victim outside the protection of the law, leaving them vulnerable to torture, extrajudicial killing, and a complete erasure of their legal identity and rights.
👉A Crime That Wounds Beyond the Victim :
Enforced disappearance is unique in the anguish it inflicts, not only on the disappeared individual but on their families and communities, who are left in prolonged uncertainty, unable to mourn, seek justice, or find closure. This ambiguous suffering, often stretching across years or even decades, has been described as a form of torture in itself for those left behind. Families frequently face additional hardship as they search for answers, encountering silence, obstruction, or intimidation from authorities responsible for the disappearance.
👉A Global and Persistent Concern :
Since the mid-20th century, enforced disappearance has been employed as a systematic tool of repression by authoritarian regimes and, more recently, has emerged as a tactic in the context of armed conflicts, political unrest, and organized crime across many regions of the world. Despite the adoption of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance in 2006, this practice continues in numerous countries today, underscoring the urgent need for sustained international vigilance, accountability, and action.
👉The International Day:
Purpose and Significance
The International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances was established by the United Nations General Assembly to raise awareness of this grave human rights violation, honor the memory of victims, and call upon states to take concrete action to prevent enforced disappearances, investigate past and ongoing cases, and hold perpetrators accountable. This day also serves to recognize the courage and resilience of families and human rights defenders who continue to campaign tirelessly for truth, justice, and the safe return of their loved ones.
⚡A Call to Action :
Ending enforced disappearance requires unwavering political will, robust legal frameworks, and genuine cooperation between states, civil society, and international institutions. Governments must ratify and fully implement relevant international conventions, ensure independent and effective investigations into all reported cases, and guarantee that victims' families receive truth, justice, and reparation. Equally important is the need to dismantle the culture of impunity that allows such crimes to persist unchecked.
On this day, we reaffirm our collective commitment to a world in which no person can simply vanish without a trace, and where every family's right to know the truth is upheld and respected.
We stand in solidarity with the victims, their families, and all those working relentlessly to shed light on this hidden and enduring tragedy.

Our hearts are with the people of #Nepal and #Tibet in the wake of the devastating floods that have swept through the Himalayan border region this week.
Entire communities have been lost in an instant homes, livelihoods, and loved ones swept away by waters no one could have prepared for.
Thousands remain missing, and countless families are still searching for answers amid unimaginable grief and uncertainty.
👉To every survivor: your pain is seen, and you are not alone. To every family still waiting for news of a missing loved one: we hold you in our thoughts during these unbearable days. Recovery from a tragedy of this scale takes more than time it takes the support of a global community willing to stand with those who have lost everything.
Relief efforts on the ground are urgent and ongoing. Survivors need shelter, clean water, medical care, and essential supplies, while search and rescue teams continue working around the clock in extremely difficult conditions.
Humanitarian organizations on the ground need our support now more than ever.
If you are able, please consider donating to trusted relief organizations providing emergency assistance to flood-affected communities in Nepal and Tibet. Even a small contribution can help provide food, clean water, or shelter to a family who has lost everything.
If you cannot give financially, sharing accurate information and keeping the affected communities in your thoughts also matters.
To those grieving, to those still searching, and to those rebuilding from nothing we stand with you.

Today, we observe Grief Awareness Day a day dedicated to acknowledging one of the most profound and universal aspects of the human experience: loss, and the grief that follows it.
Grief is often misunderstood. It is not a single emotion, but a complex and deeply personal process that unfolds differently for every individual.
It may follow the death of a loved one, but it can also emerge from the end of a relationship, the loss of a job or career, a significant life transition, declining health, or even the quiet loss of a future one had once imagined.
Each of these experiences carries its own weight, and each deserves to be recognized rather than minimized.
Despite how common grief is, it remains a subject many are reluctant to discuss openly. Social expectations often encourage people to "move on" quickly, to appear composed, or to grieve privately so as not to burden others. As a result, many carry their sorrow in silence, believing that prolonged grief is a sign of weakness rather than a natural response to loss. In truth, there is no correct timeline for healing. Grief does not proceed in a straight line it moves in waves, resurfacing unexpectedly, sometimes long after others assume the difficult period has passed.
Grief Awareness Day invites us to challenge these misconceptions.
It calls on us to create environments within families, workplaces, and communities where sorrow can be expressed honestly, without fear of judgment or the pressure to "get over it."
It also serves as a reminder that supporting someone through grief rarely requires perfect words or solutions. Often, the most meaningful support is simply showing up: listening without trying to fix, acknowledging pain without minimizing it, and allowing space for silence when words are not enough.
For those currently experiencing grief, this day is a reminder that you are not alone, and that seeking support whether from friends, family, or a mental health professional is a sign of strength, not weakness. For those who wish to support someone else, even small, consistent gestures of care can make a meaningful difference over time.
As we mark this day, let us commit to fostering greater compassion, patience, and openness around grief recognizing it not as something to overcome quickly, but as a natural part of the human journey toward healing.

Every year on August 29, the world marks the International day against Nuclear Tests a day dedicated to raising public awareness about the devastating effects of nuclear weapons testing and to building momentum toward a world free of nuclear tests.
This day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2009, following a resolution proposed by Kazakhstan. It commemorates the closure of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site on August 29, 1991 the very site where, over nearly four decades, the former Soviet Union conducted more than 450 nuclear tests, many of them atmospheric, without adequate regard for the health and safety of nearby populations.
The consequences of nuclear testing don't end when the explosion does. Communities near test sites in Kazakhstan, the Pacific Islands, Nevada, Algeria, and elsewhere have lived for generations with elevated rates of cancer, birth defects, and genetic disorders. Soil, water, and food chains remain contaminated in some areas even decades later. Entire ecosystems and ways of life have been disrupted, and the psychological and social scars run just as deep as the physical ones.
Since the first nuclear test in 1945, more than 2,000 nuclear tests have been conducted worldwide. While the pace has slowed dramatically since the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) opened for signature in 1996, the treaty has still not entered into force, and the threat of renewed testing remains real.
This day calls on governments, scientists, civil society, and ordinary citizens to:
👉Remember the victims and survivors of nuclear testing
👉Support full ratification and enforcement of the #CTBT
👉Advocate for global nuclear disarmament
👉Educate future generations about the true human cost of nuclear weapons
Nuclear testing is not a relic of the past it is a reminder of what humanity must never repeat. Every test, wherever it happens, leaves scars on people and the planet that last far longer than the mushroom cloud itself.
A world free of nuclear tests is not just an ideal; it's a necessary step toward a safer, more sustainable future for all.
