Beautiful Jess and dear baby Barney are going home today.
Three weeks ago both were dying; Jess was full of deadly fluke and lungworm, and poor Barney was so damaged inside from parasites that he was pooing blood.
Thanks to a trailcam and a watchful loving guardian they were brought in for urgent treatment.
Today they are shining with good health and are ready for their second chance of life in the wild.

This precious & very sick female is Clover. For 2 days she was so weak she didn’t move, eat or drink. Her lungs are full of lungworm, her nose full of snot & she’s struggling to breathe due to a severe infection. She’s been such a worry. Thankfully the meds are doing their job 🤞

The phone has been so busy today. I took the first call while I was still in bed this morning and it's been pretty steady since then. Two calls were so tragic - people who saw a hedgehog out in the day yesterday, so put him in a box with food and water and kept him, and are only ringing today because the poor hedgehog is "making a funny sound".
The 'funny sound' is an animal dying in agony, drowning in his own blood and mucus.
A hedgehog out in the day is AN EMERGENCY.
Please get them to a rescue (never a vet) immediately. Every minute you keep them reduces their chance of survival.
And every minute you keep them means another minute they have to suffer in agony.
Keeping a sick wild animal just adds the stress of captivity to their suffering.
Please be their ambulance, not their jailor.

Darling Nelson is responding well to treatment. His coughing has stopped, and judging by his bright shiny eyes and smiley little face, he's feeling a lot better today.🥰
He has another 10 days of treatment to go, then he will be released back to the wild, for a second chance at life.

Poor darling Caddy had such a huge burden of lungworm that he's been having a rough time.
Aside from having hundreds of these microscopic worms wriggling away inside him, filling up his lungs, making each breath harder and harder, lungworm also travel through the lung's blood vessels into the heart.
They cause a large amount of damage as they move and migrate, affecting the nervous system (which can result in fits) and the blood clotting system.
Lungworm is serious, and deadly.
It's contracted from eating or drinking on surfaces contaminated by the slug's slime, or the slug itself. So please wash outside dishes well each morning, and never sprinkle food onto grass (which is likely to have slug slime deposits).
And if you ever hear coughing please ring a good rescue for advice immediately.
I'm very happy to say dear little Caddy is over halfway through his treatment and is now doing very well and gaining weight. He'll soon be able to return to the wild where he belongs, with a full bill of health.🥰
