Ujjain’s Crossroads: When the Path to God Becomes a Battlefield

Tear gas in the holy city. Ujjain, a city synonymous with spiritual transcendence, is today choking on the fumes of civil unrest. The irony is brutal: preparations for the Simhastha (Kumbh) — a grand festival of immense faith — have become the catalyst for communal friction.

The state’s logic is simple. Roads must be widened for the millions of pilgrims arriving for the Kumbh. The Shahi Masjid stands in the way. Therefore, it must be removed.

But for the Muslim community, this is not just about urban planning. It is about the erasure of their place in the city’s spiritual map.

This morning, thousands gathered against the demolition. Stones were thrown. Police fired tear gas shells. A dispute over infrastructure has spiraled into a law-and-order crisis. Whenever faith and state power collide without dialogue, the result is always a cloud of smoke and a trail of broken trust.

This is not just a story about a road in Madhya Pradesh. It is the story of a nation grappling with its own identity. Who gets to define "development"? Whose religious sentiments are sacrosanct, and whose are negotiable? When the machinery of the state moves to clear a path for one community's grandest expression of faith, and in doing so, tramples the sacred space of another, the very foundation of our secular fabric is fractured.

Tear gas is not a solution; it is a temporary suppression of a permanent grievance. Bulldozers cannot build lasting harmony. If the road to the Kumbh is paved over the ruins of a mosque and the resentment of a community, that road will forever be stained.

Ujjain needs a road for pilgrims, yes. But it also needs a bridge between communities. The state must abandon the hammer of force for the scalpel of dialogue.

Because a city that cannot protect the dignity of its minorities, even as it prepares to host the gods, has lost its soul.

Akshay was going on his two-wheeler. Three Muslim men were walking past. It was a wide road and Akshay could have driven past them but he deliberately stopped his two-wheeler behind them and started honking. Then, without any provocation, Akshay started abusing and slapping the three men.

As they started walking away, he followed them to a distance and continued beating and abusing them in full public view. No one came to their rescue.
