@musingsofadr Ha yes, quite. We could end up doing nothing if we are always looking for more granular research. Like your post says - at some point a decision has to be made that you feel has the best chance of delivering for your teachers and students

@musingsofadr Yes I see. The next bit to look at then would be the link between self concept and attainment, and whether there is variation between groups (eg LPA vs HPA). Negative self concept doesn't sound like a nice thing, but if they're learning more then perhaps it's a fair price to pay

1. Staffing practices are crucial. Too often lower sets are taught by the less experienced teachers; meaning
2. "bottom sets" already lead to negative social comparisons/self-concept
